Just finished my 2nd homemade briar pipe! Decided to go with a thinner more graceful design, something like an elongated billiard or brandy. Still using just a saw, many grains of sand paper, and just a little bit of rotary tool to refine the curve between the upper portion of the shank and the bowl. No stain, just paragon pipe wax.

Still working to refine my skills.

Is this another amazon briar block? Looks awesome! Very good work and nice proportion! How well are these blocks drilled now that you have done two of them?

It is another amazon block briar kit. It's actually drilled very well. Both kits have holes drilled to center with lower line of shaft hitting the bottom point of the bowl so there is no well. Sure it's not a Nording or a Peterson, but I've had Kaywoodies and drilled off center, and Medicos with bad wells. So for the same price it's actually pretty good.

Great job! That's one good looking pipe! Job well done, mate!
However, 39$ price point is a tad steep in my eyes for what looks from the amazon description as left over blocks from italy. The same money already buys you a block of Tuscan XX briar 360 degree straight grain plateaux!

Or if you want it already pre-bored, check out Pipe Makers Emporium they have some beautiful blocks in there!

Beautiful pipe, great job!! Can't wait to see what the patina looks like after you've smoked it for a while..

Really nice work. I have tried to carve four pipes and only got one that looked halfway decent. I'd say you have a real talent and should keep carving.

I think it looks great! If you are really trying to hone your skills and are looking for constructive criticism, post some pics on the pipe makers forum ( http://www.pipemakersforum.com/forum/ ). Some great guys over there who can be brutally honest and help you get to the next level of pipe-maker-dom.

dont laugh, dont judge... I used a carpenter's saw. 8O
Just a standard lumber cutting saw for all the major cuts. I did actually just pickup a little coping saw that I forgot to mention. I used it to give the few corner shaping cuts such as shaping the bowl from its rough square to an octagon, as well as the shank, and also to cut the rough shape of the bottom. From there on out it was pretty much sand paper all the way.
Which by sanding, I mean by hand. lots of sheets of sand paper and a whole lot of elbow grease! I dont have a grinding wheel. I dont really have that many tools, at least not for wood work. most of my tools are electronics or very basic mechanic related.
