Very nice work! Besides the sense of accomplishment, and the satisfaction of smoking your own pipe, you get to bask in the

admiration and esteem of your fellow pipers here online. Good job!
ps. It looks like that little stump of wood propping up the stem could become a nice, matching tamper.

good work. I always enjoy new craftsmen. Stick to what you are doing you will find that less is more.

Beautiful job! I would like to try one if I were not allergic to sand paper. My skill level, better off applying $39.00 to a store bought. It is great looking.

Excellent work! Great 2nd effort. From the photo the shank/stem connection looks smooth. Finish is nice, symmetry is great, maybe a little to much "chin". Take a little off the bottom/front of the bowl and I think that will improve the proportion. Just my .02 cents.
No matter how long we've been making pipes, we're all trying to refine our skills. Constantly. You learn something with every pipe.
Here's a classic Bulldog I'm working on. Almost finished except for final sanding/staining/buffing.

This is my third attempt at the Bulldog. Difficult shape to get just right.

I made it from PME Tuscan Ebauchon. Great wood w/ minimal sand pits:

Here's a freehand I recently finished:

Freehands are easy to make, just go with the flow. Making standard/classic shapes is far more challenging and educating.
Keep at it, you definitely have talent.

CACooper - those look great! I was going to do a freehand to "make room for error" but went with the more classic shape because like you said; more challenging and educating. :D
Any advice on rustication? I want to rusticate the bottom half of a bowl sometime kind of like a Nording. Looks like round divits in series of lines like flames under a bowl.

Here's a partially rusticated Rhodesian I recently completed:

CooperPipeCP-26002.jpg

These are the secret tools to accomplish the texture:

PipeMakingTools001.jpg

I made the tools myself. File handles purchased from ACE hardware. Bore them out. HSS drill bits, shank end ground to a taper on my belt sander, then J-B welded into the handle. HSS is pretty hard and will last years.
To use, rotate the sharp ends back and forth against the bowl with some pressure, and keep moving around the bowl. Easy. Just try not to slip and drive the sharp end into your palm.
Then use a small wire wheel on a Dremel to burnish the surface, sand with 600 grit to smooth any sharp edges. Stain and schellac.
Or, you can use a Dremel with small ball shaped cutter bits to carve the surface. Practice on a few scraps to experiment first.
Best of luck.

CACooper!
Wish I had your set of tools!! Someday I'll work my way to that. Nothing better than making your own pipes, than making your own pipes with tools that you made yourself!! That is about as EPIC as it gets!!! Definitely something to be proud of!!
I was thinking about the dremel bit. Good advice... scraps first! Thanks!

I think that's awesome. You guys have some real talent. I can barely make a bed much less a pipe.

When the tools don't exist, you've got to make your own.
Here's a nifty device for holding the bit end of a stem in the chuck on the lathe:

PeterADallSrPipe001.jpg

Long time pipe maker Paul Perri showed me how to make it. It centers the stem automatically. It's a "why didn't I think of that" design.
Necessity is the mother of invention!

That is an amazing second pipe, I agree with all of the other guys when they say you have talent. I can just imagine what you could do with a full workshop of the proper tools. Definitely keep at it.

CA I would like to see some more of your work but sadly This is Josh's thread and too much info from you may deter from that. Could you start a thread of your own perhaps? I would love to see more of your pipe making skills.

Just trying to "spread the wealth" of knowledge.

You're probably right though, I really should keep my "secrets" to myself. If you didn't notice, I was the only pipe maker showing my tools and technique. No one else divulged theirs. Smart on their part.
Lesson learned.
Take care all.
BTW, pipe three looks very good. Keep it up.

Ca, I don't think gwtwdbss was telling you not to show us your work and skills, just that it is Josh's thread showing his work and you kind of thread jacked it. We all love looking at pipes and listening to people who do it for a living. I think if you started a thread showing us your skills and techniques, it would be very cool.
