Yeah that's a war era pipe. I wouldn't sell it but second on getting it appraised if you do, as well as it will likely go up in value over time.

I have a 1943 RB, ODA my birth year, at that time my Father was in the Navy, we were at war, Dunhill was haveing a hard time making pipes, will I keep it, you're damn right I will, got my oldest son by the arm and said see that pipe, don't give a damn if you smoke it or not but that one gets passed down to your son. What is it worth? I don't give a damn some things are more important than money. If I sell it will it make me rich? NO, enough said.

I have a 1953 Patent and a 1932 Patent that I got for a steal on both of em. I paid $70.00 in total for the both of em and could easily get $500.00 - $700.00 for the pair. But why........ I value em as a personal treasure much more than a little cash.

I feel foolish for saying this but, was I the only one that had to look up the word shill? Lol I guess I learned something from this post! Anyway great advice here and a great moral lesson for a new piper like myself as I just begin my collection.

lol- everything about this post is bizarre!
Grimsthorpe - you made the original post 7 mos ago and come back now to thank everyone for their responses.
You say you can't bring yourself to smoke it, yet you do smoke pipes. If it's really not about the money, I would cherish that pipe. Smoke it and enjoy it.
If it is about the money, you should consign it out. That pipe, if sold by someone who has a large audience, could bring in big bucks (I'm no expert, but guessing anywhere from $300-600).
If you do it on your own it could take a while, but if you choose this route, set a Buy Now / Make Offer auction. Tough part is figuring a fair price (one that will sell the pipe reasonably fast, but not so low that you lose out). If I had to make a guess at a price, I'd put it up for $800 (could be way off here, but from my limited knowledge, that's a reasonable price). As long as the "best offer" option is there so you can accept a lower offer if no one will pay that price.
Curious what others would set the price at.

Let's see some pics, I wouldn't be surprised if it went for over a 1000$. Was you grampa in the military by chance? I think they gave out pipes for soldiers in their kits, I know they gave them out during WW1 to soldiers. If your grampa wasn't a smoker it would explain why it was unsmoked. personally I wouldn't smoke a 1940 dunhill with the original box, plus I can't see a 1940 era pipie not looking traditional and desirable.

This post has gone to an odd Anne Landers kind of place. Who knew? Really just wanted to know if I should put the pipe on Craigslist or send it off to the Sally Anne. I know, callous bastard that I am . I really appreciate the good pipe based advise. The rest is just odd dross. The pipe is obviously worth doing some careful examination before listing it for sale. I am sure my grandfather, being a Scottish banker his entire life, would appreciate this entire process.

Cheers.

That's fair grimsthorpe - appreciate the reply. IMHO ebay will be the place to go if you want to get the highest price. Hope you'll share a pic of the pipe with box with us. I for one would enjoy seeing it.

Dear Andrew,
I don't know why he did not smoke it. He smoked a similar looking pipe most of his life and he lived to 98! In his early 90s his doctor suggested he give the pipe up, and we have always maintained, that is what did him in. I suspect the fact it was such a nice pipe purchased during difficult times may have had something to do with it.

And no, he did not serve in the military. His position in the bank and his age both would have been contributing factors to him not participating overseas.

grimsthorpe, if I owned one of my grandfathers pipes I would never sell it no matter what I could get for it. It is part of your families history. Will a few hundred bucks alter your lifestyle in any way shape or form? I would find a blend that works in that pipe and keep it. Do you really think your grandfather would want one of his pipes going to strangers? I think your karma will take a huge hit if you sell it.

lol! I have to agree. My grandfather was born in the 1800s in Ireland and smoked a pipe all his life. I would love to have one of his original pipes - sadly that will likely never happen. And here you have an unsmoked Dunhill to boot! Cannot beat it.
I am sure your grandfather would be very pleased to know you kept it and more importantly, smoked it too.

six, I would give my left nut to have any of my grandfathers pipes, that kind of family history should be cherished and not sold off for a measly few bucks.

Dear cigrmaster,
Thanks so much for the very generous offer. However, I am not much interested in acquiring your left nut!

Probably the only time I'll hear about my birth year pipe being available.. Lucky, it doesn't make me drool too much!

GRimsthorpe....if you really are willing to sell that pipe then you received a lot of good advice. Search the internet, ask a professional to determine it's value.

As you've been told the Dunhill factory has been bombed in 1941 so you probably have a little treasure there (I'd say more than 500usd if it's in top condition with box etc.)
But...are you really sure you want to sell it ? it's your grandpa's pipe...I would think carefully about it. When sold, it will never come back....

Don't sell the pipe. Especially if you're a pipe smoker yourself! My goodness. Load her up and smoke a bowl in your grandfather's memory. That's what I'd do.
