What is the best Savinelli pipe?

All I can offer is any Autograph. I can’t speak for other models.

    Rattray's English/Scottish - too much choice...

Don’t forget Jock’s Mixture. I’m smoking it now and I recommend it.

If You Could Visit any Pipe Shop...

Living in Northern Virginia, I am blessed with several pipe shops within an hour from my residence: 5 Old Virginia Tobacco Companies, the closest of which is 15 minutes away, and holds monthly “ Pipe Nights”two Tobaccology stores, which stock decent blends, Leesburg Pipe and Cigar, and John...

Is Jolly Old Saint Nicholas still in production?

I must admit I rarely smoke aromatics, but I tried both editions and loved them both.

    Headache from Presbyterian

Then maybe you were predestined to dislike it.

    Santa's Christmas Cheer

I did that and it’s working better. After 50+ years of pipe smoking, there is always something new to learn. Thanks for the advice.

    Santa's Christmas Cheer

I popped a tin of 2015 Christmas Cheer last week, and it was dry right out of the tin. I found the flavor still muted. I wouldn’t pay $70+ for it, but I dropped only $20 when it first came out.

    Cob>Briar

I’m a real codger (50+ years pipe man ). I’ve tried cobs and meerschaums over the decades, and now I’m strictly briar. Aesthetics and durability are the big factors. The old Roman saying is de gustibus non est disputandum. Holds true to this day.

Do You Have Any Pipes You DON'T Smoke?

If I buy it, I smoke it. If I tire of it and stop smoking it, I trade it.

Acrylic Stems vs Vulcanite Stems: A Comparison

I much prefer acrylic, and the best acrylic I’ve come across is the Perspex on old GBDs. They’re a pain in the ass to clean, but very comfortable.

    Iwan Ries Blends

From the mid 70s up to the mid 90s I smoked Three Star Gold, Grey, and Red almost exclusively. I lived in Chicago then and worked three blocks from the store; and that spoiled me. Then I moved to the D.C. area and found Dunhill, Esoterica, McClelland and C+D and haven’t touched any Iwan Ries...

    Red Virginia Aha

Robert McConnell Red Virginia and Wessex Red Flake are real keepers.

    Your Favorite Underrated Blend

I agree with you on Edisto. It’s an excellent blend. Haven’t yet tried Waccamaw.

    Pipe Smoking and Sports

I routinely have my first pipe at 11:30:each day, six hours after getting up. I play pickleball at noon on Thursday, and can smoke only half a bowl before playing. I haven’t noticed any change in my ( limited) performance.

    Cough?

Coughs are like sneezes: your body is reacting to expel some foreign element and return your body to homeostasis. There are a multitude of factors involved.

Will Italian Makers Ever Switch Back to Ebonite/Vulcanite Stems?

The most comfortable acrylic stems I’ve found are the old GBD Perspex stems. They’re just a bit difficult to clean out to keep clear.

Will Italian Makers Ever Switch Back to Ebonite/Vulcanite Stems?

Thirty five of my pipes have acrylic stems. I have 4 Walt Hettingers and they have ebonite stems, but I’ve seen no discoloration. I find acrylic attractive and idiot proof in terms of maintenance. I do use rubber softy bits on all my pipes.

It takes a Chicago boy to appreciate that fine old brew.
