    When Building Cake

Yes. I will generally wad up the paper towel and just twisted in the bowl. Of course I always run a pipe cleaner through the pipe after each smoke as well. If you do this religiously after each smoke, your pipes will last for a lifetime.

    When Building Cake

Exactly what I do. I have pipes that I've been smoking since the mid 70s and I rarely ream a bowl.

How Do You Store a Lit Bowl

There is rarely a day that goes by that I don't extinguish a pipe mid smoke to finish it later. I usually do this by covering the bowl with my lighter. It extinguishes the ember and just a few seconds. I usually cover the bowl with a wind cap and stick it in pocket until I'm ready to finish it...

Is It Really Necessary To Rotate Pipes? My Opinion!

Haha. True. I've had these boots for 15 years and it shows.

Is It Really Necessary To Rotate Pipes? My Opinion!

I've always thought that the need to "rest" a pipe for 24 hours before you smoke it again evolved so that pipe makers would sell more pipes. I started to smoke a pipe in the 70s when I was in college and smoked the same pipe multiple times a day for a couple of years. I always cleaned it with a...

    My new Wittluck's pipe.

I own several high-end Artisan pipes, which I bought purely for aesthetic reasons. Of course I smoke them because what else is a pipe for but I own many factory estate pipes, which I paid very little for and they smoke every bit as good as my high-end pipes. If a pipe is well drilled and the...

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

You expressed your restoration process much better than I did but I think our goals are similar.

Just curious...what shapes do you avoid?

What Kind Of Pipe Purchaser Are You?

I have been smoking a pipe for over 40 years and, as you can imagine, over that time I have bought many pipes. I also restore estate pipes to either trade or sell. because of my long history with pipes and my interest in restoration I'm sure I have moved over 1500 pipes through my house. In my...

    A Tale Of Two Pipes

I stopped at the yard sale with the Mrs. this past Saturday and I saw two pipes bound together by a rubber band. I never see pipes at yard sales so I was intrigued. I inspected them and quickly put them back down. These pipes were in horrendous condition. I bought and restored hundreds of pipes...

    Pipe Cleaning and Maintenance

I always run a pipe cleaner through the stem, mortise and shank. I wipe out the bowl with a wadded up paper towel after every smoke, even if I smoke the same pipe multiple times a day. I rarely do anything else. Every once in a great while I will have to use a high octane booze for a bit of a...

    Smoking Entire Bowl

When I started smoking a pipe in my late teens(over 40 years ago) a codger told me to think of the tobacco at the bottom of the bowl as the heal of a cigar and to not expect to smoke it. I mostly smoke a pipe to ash but occasionally I am left with dottle. I don't worry about it!

How Do You Pick Your Next Smoke?

After 40 years of pipe smoking, I try to keep it simple. I generally smoke 6 to 8 bowls a day. Almost every day I smoke the following 1. One bowl of Carter Hall. 2.One Aro 3. One bowl of Pegasus 4. 3 or 4 VaPers including Elizabethan Mixture, Orlich Golden Sliced, Boswells Private Stock, Escudo...

    Smokin and Walkin

My morning ritual. Wake up about 6am, bathroom, get dressed, put on a pot of coffee drink a glass of water, load up 2 pipes, and go for an hour walk. Slowly...just to get moving. By the time I am back my wife is up, bed is made and we have coffee together as I smoke my 2nd pipe. The early...

    Issue Smoking Flakes

I dry all of the tobacco that I smoke overnight. Usually, I'll take a decent quantity, maybe 3 ounces, lay it out on a couple of paper plates and in the morning I transfer it to a mylar bag. My personal preference is for extremely dry tobacco. It works well for me. Then, I do the three pinch...

    Best affordable pipes?

I have a couple hundred estate pipes( been collecting for 40 years) and about 20 Artisan pipes. To be honest about 90% of them smoke very similarly. Some have a slightly tighter draw, etc. but very few of the pipes I own are poor smokers. For the new pipe smoker I always recommend buying estate...

I started my morning with a bowl of Northwoods in this really old Savinelli that was gifted to me by a neighbor lady.

    Pipe Relights...Don't Worry About It!

I've been smoking a pipe for a well over 40 years and I've gotten pretty good at it. I have dependable technique, decent pacing and a good packing technique. Generally, when I smoke a pipe at most, I have two or three relights. However, on occasion, even with all my years of experience, I smoke...
