answer to my own question both blends are decent nothing to write home about but not bad. As far as Boswell goes, I've been trying for two weeks to get them to respond about making a pipe, but I guess they're making enough money off of tobacco sales with all the closures that they can't be bothered with making a pipe. Needless to say, I'll do my buying elsewhere.
Like @Manawydan posted, they don't do commissions, but they do offer up a selection of pipes for sale every Monday evening on their website.

It’s a wonderful family run business. Back in 2009-2010 I was going to school in DC and would make a trip up to their shop a few Saturdays a month. I own 5 Boswell pipes.
JM is the primary pipe carver; his son Dan used turn out a few pipes as well.
They always had finished pipes for sale in the shop.
I think the demand for his pipes exceeds the output. Every Monday night they post new pipes for sale; they’re usually sold out in a day or two.
I called several years ago and talked to them about a commission pipe. They said we don’t do commission pipes.

Boswell blends are definitely tasty - I have particularly enjoyed Private Stock, Paradise, and Christmas Cookie. If you have a chance to go, it's a really cool experience. They usually have some of their pipes on display, for sale, and they typically have hard to find tins in addition to their own blends.

If you end up in Chambersburg around breakfast or lunch time, check out the place called "The Historic Texas Lunch" -- it's a small, family-owned restaurant that I found to be particularly good.

I smoke more of Boswell's blends than any other tobacco. I live fairly close to their Pennsylvania store and usually make it there a couple times a month. In fact, I was there today and got an aromatic called cherry smash, which I enjoy. I also picked up a pound of my favorite, Private Stock. If I could only smoke one tobacco for the rest of my life, it would be private stock. Everyone raves about Northwoods and while it is a fine tobacco it is not one of my favorites. However, you really can't go wrong with a Boswell blend.
