Funny thing though...
My wife simply cannot understand why I need another pipe. She replies that they are all the same. I asked her why she has so many shoes and often gets another pair. Her reply - SHADDUP! rotf

Last week, when I bought a pipe from another forum member, my wife said "How many pipes do you need?" This was literally 15 minutes after she bought yet another water bottle on Amazon. I said, "How many water bottles do YOU need?" and got the exact same reply.

This has been a tough sell and I just bullshit my way through it. "Oh different blends taste COMPLETELY different in different shapes! etc, etc."

Reminds me of the procurement guy at my old job. He said "I could buy you a $500,000 server easier than I could buy you a $50 chair because they don't understand what the server does."

A second issue for me is that I am the one with the shoe problem in my house. I have 15 different pairs of Vans!

This is an imaginary conversation:

Wife: Why do you need another pipe?
Me: Why do you need another pair of shoes?

Wife: Because I need shoes to match what I'm wearing. Why do you need another pipe?
Me: Because I need another pipe to smoke this new tobacco I'm smoking.

What happens when you have a library at home, with thousands of books? I love literature, books on history, philosophy, anthropology, politics. I understand the sadness of the narrator of the story. When you love something, you can't stop thinking about getting it. The woman's conversation reminds me a lot of my wife. Although I am very lucky to have a woman who enjoys my library, and my modest collection of pipes.
This is why I have a library card. I have a healthy collection of books but I’d go broke buying everyone I wanted to read. Plus I’m too young to have a house full of pipes, tobacco, and books stacked everywhere haha 🤣

I always tell mine the truth, she tells me the truth. Neither of us spend very much on stuff.

When she does spend money, I'm always glad to see her do it. I believe she feels the same about me.

All that being said... I have been known to round the amount down a bit. Haha
I’m much the same way though I wish my wife was a bit more like yours. I can tell my wife whatever I want about the prices of things and she runs off some time later and checks the account to see if I’m lying. I never lie, so if I got it wrong, I might get a sarcastic “oh, $xx, huh?”

I’m also glad when mine spends some money on herself. Partially because she tells me I like it when she’s happy, but mostly because I can then spend more and have ammunition to defend myself.

I’ve only been pipe smoking for a couple of weeks and she dislikes smoking of any kind, so she was perturbed at the switch from cigars…. Until I outlined the economics for her.

And I stink somewhat less so there’s that.

I'm still trying to understand how some of you guys can be married to someone you have to hide the price of pipes from. Either you can afford to buy a new pipe or you can't.
No kidding. Lots of red flags in this thread.

I'm at the point in my life where money isn't a real consideration(Retired, well invested, always worked two jobs). I only say that to point out the fact that my collection reflects my taste and not my finances.Frankly, there are so many pipes moving in and out of my house that I don't think my wife would want to know about the exchange of money. But, my collecting niche are mostlyfactory pipes from the 40s through the 80s and I rarely pay more than $20 for most. On occasion, I might go as high as $30 or $35. Many of them were given to me or cost as little as five dollars. As I've said many times before , after restorationthe old factory pipes smoke about as well as the Artisan pipes. I like the idea of enjoying a pipe that has a history and tells a story.

I wonder if the hair stylist asks my wife if her husband knows how much her haircut/coloring costs! 😜

But seriously, my wife is totally cool about it. When Vauen pipes were 75% off a few weeks ago, I was so excited about it that I ran and showed her the deal I got. Her reply? “You only got two?”

I promptly ordered two more.

Even I don't know let alone my wife.
This is so true. If she asks about a specific pipe, I tell her. If she asks for a total, I don't know. And I really, truly don't know. I've never once even tried to estimate a total in my head. Strategic ignorance, I call it. It's a close friend of strategic incompetence.
