Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

Update: Tried Backwoods Buttered Rum, and Backwoods original. The Buttered Rum wasn't too far off from that scent I remembered, but a bit more on the sweet side (missing that incense-like component). Both varieties were really just a nice, old-timey aromatic pipe smell. And that's probably...

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

Update: I've gone ahead and ordered some Backwoods Buttered Rum, as well as original Backwoods (which one reviewer described as "incense-like", so that's a possibility as well), and some Velvet just for the heck of it since I haven't tried this classic. I do wonder about original Backwoods...

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

Totally possible. Who knows: maybe the pouch I saw was a leather tobacco pouch and not a commercially branded one.

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

I mean, it wasn't CB White (tried that), not Black (Lane BCA is similar to this), not Royal (too similar to 1Q). I guess that leaves Gold, but I believe that's yet another vanilla Cavendish. And I'm pretty sure it wasn't CB grape 🤣

Great resource! Thank you! Looks I have some homework to do at my local gas station 😉

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

Sadly, I can't recall anything about what the pouch looked like. Good idea about searching for those terms on tobacco reviews.

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

Quite true, and excellent observation! However, I did smell a very similar smell outside a club, with no pipes in sight. Fairly recently, in fact. I do suspect Backwoods Buttered Rum because I know they also make cigars widely available in gas stations & convenience stores.

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

I have. That isn't the scent (though I do enjoy it).

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

Honestly, that's my #1 suspect at this point. Heck, I suppose it's not a very expensive prospect to try it out.

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

Very true. That may be worth a try.

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

Possible - I haven't tried those. But would that have been available to the average person in NYC at the time?

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

Definitely not the culprit, alas. I've tried PA many times and it wasn't that.

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

I've tried Super Value Bourbon Whiskey, which I've heard is similar to Borkum Riff and that definitely wasn't anything like that smell.

Help Me Solve A Pipe Mystery!

The first time I ever smelled a pipe was when I was a kid. My grade school janitor smoked one, and the wonderful aroma is burned into my brain. The problem is: now even as an experienced smoker, I've never smelled a blend quite like it! Here's some basic info/clues: 1. This was in the New York...

    Trying to Find the Flavor

Here's my two cents: It took me a while to deduce this, but when folks are writing about flavors, they are speaking of those flavors as they compare to other tobaccos. All tobacco tastes like tobacco. Just as all red wine tastes like red wine, and all coffee tastes like coffee. But compare...

    Best of the Best OCBs…Go!

Sir Walter Raleigh regular remains my favorite codger blend, and probably my favorite blend overall. Like one reviewer online said: it's like "carpet slippers for the pipe".

Why Transfer From Round Tin to Mason Jar?

Your standard round tobacco tin (left) has a rubber seal that is nearly identical to that of a mason jar's lid (right). When tightened, it seems like the seal on the tin is pretty decent; even to the point of being difficult to open the dang tin! For pouches or other kinds of tins, transferring...

Spicy Pipe: What's Going On Here?

It is vulcanite, yes. In fact, now I'm wondering if the stem isn't to blame. Even sucking air through the empty pipe produces a spicy flavor.
