How to Keep Pipe Rim from Darkening?

If you exhale through the bowl alot ('breath method'), all that heat and smoke will penetrate into the briar, and no amount of scrubbing will completely remove it.

    Rubbing Out Flakes.

Fold. It's a flake for a reason. As the blender intended.

    Changey Mind

Agree here. The Virginia flakes all taste the same to me.

    Trouble Contacting Synjeco

After my last order was returned to them by the USPS, they stopped communicating with me. I never received a refund.

Why Not Clean your Pipe After every Smoke?

Wet cleaning of the entire pipe after every smoke. Takes 3 or 4 minutes. Eliminates the need for deep cleaning. Once you get used to it, the idea of not doing it seems unpleasant.

Help Appreciated: Is it Mold or Bloom?

It is granular and it shows a specific (looking) distribution. It is plume.

    Rim Charring

Unavoidable if you exhale through the bowl, as I do.

Outside of my Bowl is Darkening.

It's the result of an overheated pipe. Very often the overheating is uneven. The main concern is that you may also be charring the inner walls of the chamber.

    Carolina Red Flake Is Yucky

It's good tobacco, and many experienced smokers have enjoyed it. If someone doesn't like it that's just their personal experience.

Samual Gawith Black XX really hard to keep lit

Once you put it in the right bowl, its not a fussy one to smoke.

Samual Gawith Black XX really hard to keep lit

It sounds like you are doing it right. I had the same problem, and the only thing that completely fixed it was to change pipes. I went from a tapered bowl (rhodesian) to a non-tapered bowl (pot) and the problem was solved.

    Cellaring Too Long?

Once the seal goes, the flavor goes with it. The likelihood of of that happening increases with age. Rehydration can't do much, other than prevent the tobacco from crumbling when handled.

The Great Flakes or the Grand Delusion

I tend to fold and stuff all the flakes that I smoke, even if rubbing them out might enhance the taste somewhat. Most of my pipes are on the smaller side, and it really doesn't make sense to load those with ribbon, unless you want a 15 minute smoke.

Quality of new Dunhill pipes compared to old.

Why would Dunhill wood be so-so? I expect they purchased the best that was available at the time all thoughout the 'golden age' of Dunhill pipemaking (twenties through sixties). Did other makers have superior ways of aging their briar?

Quality of new Dunhill pipes compared to old.

One big change has been the design and execution of the buttons. Going back to the 20's, they were slim and finely shaped. Nowadays they are more oversized and slightly crude.

What is the best strike Matches you have found?

Swan Vestas put American made matches to shame. Hard to find, but I was able to place a large order with Iwan Ries recently. Ebay international is also a possibility.

The Clash Guitarist Keith Levene Dies

Metal Box was a ground breaking album. Their version of Swan Lake is astounding. RIP

    My Predictions

Although I appreciate the thought that goes into the longer responses, they may have inaccuracies buried within that go uncorrected. Given our current state of understanding, the claim that nicotine is a carcinogen is far from established. The reason that cigarettes are much more highly...
