When You Get a New Pipe?

I know that forum is fairly split on the concept of dedicating pipes. For those of you who do dedicate pipes to a specific blend or blend type, how do you determine what a new pipe is going to be dedicated to? Is it by shape? Do you smoke a handful of favorites through it, to see what it's best...

    Advice Requested: Recommend VAs

If you had to recommend three VAs, that span the spectrum of VAs, from a taste perspective, what would they be?

Random Question: History of Pipe Tobacco in the U.S.

I've heard often that we're living in a golden age of pipe tobaccos, in terms of options and blends. So my question is this; during the golden age of pipe smoking in the U.S., what was the selection like? Were there 1,000s of blends? Hundreds? Dozens? Does anyone have some idea of what sort of...

    The "Good Smoker" Pipe

You often hear pipes referred to as "good smokers" or "bad smokers". My question is this; what is meant by this phrase? Is it: The flavor in imparts? How cool the pipe remains while smoking? How well the pipe stays lit? All of the Above Some of the Above None of the Above... it's a myth and...

    Clear Mouthpiece Stem Rubber Bits

Anyone have any idea where I can find clear bits? Hate having a black mouthpiece on a beautifully colored stem. Thanks.

Aging In Sillem's Black & Rattray's Exotic Orange Tins

And perhaps "aging" isn't the right question. Do you need to immediately jar tins of this style? Thank you.

    Touring Peterson?

We're headed to Ireland in June and I'm just wondering if anyone here has toured the Peterson factory and if they'd recommend the experience. Thanks in advance.

    Two Questions About Cellaring

Does it make a difference how much air is in the jar? For instance, will stuffed to the gills have any discernible difference over half empty? With cellaring aromatics, I'm aware that they do not improve with age. If stored properly, at what point will they begin to noticeably degrade? Thank you.

    Tight Stem / Tenon

I just bought one of those Savinelli Ottagonos that SmokingPipes dropped last week. Cool pipe, but it's really hard to get the stem out. Is that something that I should expect will gradually grow easier with time or does the tightness indicate a poorly made pipe? Thanks in advance.

    An Odd Question About Virginias

I've found that Virginia tobaccos, including those that aren't pure Virginias, but for which Virginias are a significant portion of the blend, sting my nostrils. It's not that I find their aroma unpleasant. It actually physically irritates me. I've never had this experience with Aromatics...

Is There Such a Thing as a Bad Tin?

I just cracked open a tin of C&D's Pennington Gap, that I purchased in April of 2020. It must be said, I've never had this blend before. The tin note can best be described as, "disgusting". I asked my wife to nose it, simply to make sure it wasn't just me. She replied, "It smells like spoiled...

Tongue Bite, Smoking Technique, and 9MM Activated Charcoal Filters

This post if strictly intended for any new pipe smokers who may be struggling with tongue bite. On two separate occasions, I've sold all my pipes, tossed my tobacco, and went back to cigars. On this 3rd attempt, I went back into the hobby even more determined. However, I just kept getting...

    How To Clean A Lighter?

I have a silver Kiribi lighter. Over the course of time, the outer part (near the flame) has become caked in black. What is the best way to clean this up? Thank you.

Perhaps A Dumb Question: Packing Aromatics

When a tobacco has inherently more moisture or a heavy casing, should it packed differently (firmer vs. looser) than one that's drier or with minimal casing? I can't tell you how many times I've read a review on a tobacco that's just flat out goopy and reviewers on TobaccoReviews will claim...

Question: Bowl Size (Cut vs. Blend Type)

I just bought a pipe with a fairly sizable bowl: Bowl Height: 2.02 in Chamber Depth: 1.84 in Chamber Diameter: 0.87 in I've always heard that certain cuts, or perhaps certain blend types/families, do better in different shapes or bowl sizes. So, two questions: Which does bowl size impact...

    An Important Lesson Learned

Like so many people new to the hobby, I was struggling with bowls regularly going out. As I continued to read this forum, the one thing that got stuck in my head was the mantra, "The tobacco should be drier than you think and the bowl should be packed looser than you think". Unfortunately, as it...

    Second Half of the Bowl...

EDIT: Fixed Capitalization in Title (See Rule 9) I'm finding that as a I get closer and closer to the bottom of the bowl, the tobacco seems less and less interested in taking a light and subsequently staying lit. I would assume that's because moisture has built up in the bottom of my bowl. For...
