    Churchwardens

I'd like to ask you guys about Churchwardens pipes. I don't own one but I'm thinking about getting one because…well 'tis the season. Of those of you who own a churchwardens how often do you smoke it. I'm thinking it would be a good pipe to smoke while reading, probably less so good while mowing...

GL Pease & Cornell and Diehl

Has Cornell and Diehl always made the GL Pease blends? And if not when did they start?

    Scarcity or Abundance

This maybe an addendum to my last thread about a pipe smoking lifestyle but I think it has wider implications. Do you operate out of a basis of scarcity or abundance? What with the TAD and PAD here, I can guess what most of you will answer. Capitalism is structured on supply and demand but...

    Lifestyle?!!

I have recently started buying more than the occasional because I discovered Boveda packs and Tupperware are a cheap way of creating an effective humidor. The more I learned about cigars, I kept hearing the word lifestyle, "the cigar lifestyle". Defined a lifestyle refers to the way in which one...

    Big Pipes

I've recently developed a fascination with big pipes and by big I mean pipes with a chamber diameter over a 22mm and a deep chamber depth. I've read that these larger pipes are not particularly suited for Virginia flake but do better with Balkan or English blends and I'm guessing aromatics. How...

    Searching for Tati's Pipe

I am a big fan of Jacques Tati. Compared to the dreck offered up by this evenings Oscars, I find his films human and life affirming. So being a pipe smoker I wanted to find a pipe like Tati's character Hulot smoked in his movies (I've come to discover the pipe was merely a prop and Tati was a...

    The Peterson Filter

This Peterson Shannon is my most recent acquisition. I knew Peterson drill their pipes with a considerable distance between their mortis and tenon. Cutting a third off a Savinelli 6mm balsam filter fills the space quite nicely. Now if I could just find a stand that holds a Bulldog without...

    Vonnegut's Pipe

Author novelist Kurt Vonnegut's US patent for an Easily Cleaned Tobacco Pipe. pic.twitter.com/Mf1aJeAP5R Anyone know if this was ever produced?

    The Nationality of Matches

I never gave the nationality of matches much thought until I watched this Savinelli video. How to Smoke a Pipe Apparently Swedish matches are preferred. Swedish Matches

    Developing Preferences and Criteria

I would like to ask the more experienced members of this forum how their preferences in pipe buying developed. I would also ask how they came to be smoking what they smoke but tobacco preferences are more fluid and harder to quantify. I wrote a post a while back in which I said I’d run out of...

    First Dunhill

Any advice on buying my first Dunhill estate pipe? The only thing I know is that there a lot of estate Dunhill pipes for sale on-line. Is one line of Dunhill pipes preferred over another? Should I avoid pipes with the inner tube or doesn't it matter? Looking to spent up to $250 on a group 4 or...

    Which Rattray Blend?

I'm trying to decide between Rattray's Old Gowrie and Marlin Flake. The difference looks like Kentucky and Black Cavendish in each blend respectively. I'll probably just buy both but I was wondering if the forum members could provide any insight.

    Blends of Blends

I suspect we've all done this, you have two almost empty mason jars of pipe tobacco and think, "What the hell, I can get a full bowl if I use them both". Has anyone stumbled upon great combinations?

    Pipe Smoking in Tarantino Films

I believe Quentin has become a pipe smoker or at least is featuring them in his movies. That big calabash in Inglourious Basterds. Now in the trailer for The Hateful Eight.

I've Run Out of Pipes to Buy

Well that may be a bit facetious but I do think I've hit a wall or maybe one could call it a stage. I've amassed a collection of about 30 pipes, 9 Savinellis and 6 Stanwells and a few Vauens and Petersons, two nice Meerschaums, an Il Duca Morta and some other factory pipes. The next step in the...

    Smoking Older Pipes

I don't have a lot of experience with estate pipes but recently bought an unsmoked Stanwell Danish made 51 Mat. Great smoker and light as a feather but I noticed the vulcanite stem tends to oxidize very easily. I suspect the older the vulcanite the more tendency there is to oxidize or maybe it's...

    A Great Tamper for Flake

I picked up this tamper yesterday at my local BM here in Mpls. the Golden Leaf. While it's a great tamper in general, I find it works especially well for flake tobacco that was loaded via the folded method. The proprietor said these are made by a local fellow. Don't know any more info than that.

    The Archetypal Billiard

If you ask a random group of people to close their eyes and imagine a tobacco pipe I think the majority would imagine a billiard pipe. Now I’m asking a random group of pipe smokers to close their eyes and imagine a billiard pipe, what pipe in the real world comes closest to that...

Latakia – the Cilantro of Pipe Tobacco

I can tolerate Latakia, just as I can tolerate a bit of Cilantro but I find each overwhelms the blend or dish they are in and pushes out the other flavors. I’ve tried Hearth & Home’s House of Lords, GL Pease Malteses Falcon and 4noggins Bald Headed Teacher. I enjoy Latakia on rare occasion just...

    Freight Train Tobaccos?

With most of the blends I enjoy one is encouraged to sip to avoid tongue bit or over heating the pipe. It made me think what tobacco should I try if I wanted to smoke like a freight train as the saying goes.
