Tell me What I may be Doing Wrong

ok and when I compare Chasing embers ash to what I had, his is both lighter in color and much finer overall in texture. Pictures definitely help me.

Tell me What I may be Doing Wrong

Perfect that is what I needed to see. I had bits and pieces of ash but definitely dottle. For a person like me, I see in pictures. I have known folks that smoke pipes but never hung around them to see end results so have little clue. Again all thanks for the feedback.

Tell me What I may be Doing Wrong

Tell me What I may be Doing Wrong

yea that was what was at the bottom of the bowl. So that is dottle.. well what is ash then? I know what cigarette and cigar look like, is pipe ash similar? I mean even a fire from logs has ash that is grey.

Tell me What I may be Doing Wrong

Oh! One more question: So that is the ash in the 2nd photo, correct? I never really saw it until it got to the bottom I guess because it all just fell through? It never really "sat" on the top.

Tell me What I may be Doing Wrong

Thank you all! I agree, I let it dry but not for long enough. Also I probably tamped to much. The video was great for showing me how to arrive at the balanced resistance. Craig your explanation of the "drying" is very clear for me to understand. Thank you all I am not as hopeless as I thought!

    Postage to Oz.

I did not realize the huge amount of freight trains filled with Amazon, UPS, FedEx going thru our west coast such as Long Beach and Los Angeles are being looted as they sit on the tracks. Those photos of all the boxes, packages etc ripped opened and the long line of rubbish left in the wake of...

    Meerschaum Already Colored but Unsmoked

Thanks for the info folks. I was curious and know, from what I read here, a number of you really like them and this would be a pool of dependable information. I am not intending on purchasing any at the moment but now if I find one that strikes my fancy I know a bit more and can look into it...

    Meerschaum Already Colored but Unsmoked

Title edited for caps. Rule 9. -jpm About all I knew about Meer pipes was they were white and made from material that would color over time as one smoked it. That was from my first foray into the pipe world about 25+ years ago. Ffwd to now and reading all these posts and looking at meer pipe...

    Do You Clench your Pipe?

I switch the sides of my mouth all the time. I also like the “ softy bits” makes it easier for me to hold in my mouth. I also hold the pipe in either hand depending on - who knows, I just do. I am right handed.

    Deep cleaning

So having read a ton of stuff here about cleaning out a bowl after smoking I decided to do this: Normal smoke, then lightly wetted down a paper towel with with -years old Bourbon whiskey. I don't drink as I can not tolerate the taste of alcohol. But this smelled fantastic so I wiped out my bowl...

    How Much is Too Much?

@hauntedmyst Thanks for the link to the year-long test of the Dr. Grabow pipe vs the 7 pipe rotation. I might never have stumbled upon that thread. I over think almost everything and with all the advice here it makes my wheels spin even faster. It was good to read that year long example of 1 pipe.

Help me Find my First Tobacco..

If u have never smoked a pipe, and own no pipe- I would suggest this: buy a corn cob for about $5-6 at Missouri corn cob. Get 2 or 3 if u like. Buy just a few 1 oz. Bags of bulk tobacco. That Lane 1Q comes that way as do many others. Practice the techniques you read here and/ or see on you tube...
