First Impression: Missouri Meerschaum Tom Sawyer & Balkan Sasieni

Finally, a distinct tin note to enjoy. With the exception of ketchup/vinegar from the McClelland's Red & Black, my tin sniffing experience to date has been unremarkable. The Balkan Sasieni tin exudes a leathery, smokey aroma, one that I find very pleasing. Not that cheap, imported split leather...

Seeking to join the "Birth Year Club"

If anyone spies a nice briar from 1969, please share it with me. As an over-enthusiastic noob, I am not yet particular to make or style. I just know what I like when I see it (somewhat  ) I've been eyeballing a lot of Bulldogs and Rhodesians, so bonus points for one of that sort. Thanks...

    Pipes with carburetors?

How does this work? Can you still use regular, or do you need high octane 'baccy...? Thanks. Jay :nana:

    Retort!

Good morning. Please define for me retort, as it pertains to pipes. Thank you. Jay :nana:

    First cob pipe, questions.

I just got a MM Tom Sawyer to introduce myself to cobs. The bottom of the chamber area, where the stem enters, looks like a great place for matter to get stuck. Is this anything of a concern? How does cob pipe care differ from briar care? Thanks! Jay :nana:

    Encountered some rough seas today.

Aboard the Frigate today for about 50 minutes. Nothing requiring shootin', so I settled into me pipe. About 2/3 in, I encountered a nic hit like a monsoon. I was swayin' from stem to stearn and me cap almost blew overboard. Anyone else ever get a randomly heavy nic hit, unexpectedly? Jay :nana:

Concerning Assignment to the Black Frigate

I've wind in me sails and a swagger in me step. Me pipe's loaded to the nines with the murky mistress, the crumble cake of Neptune, his-self. I been studying the charts. Me powder's dry and me spirit's high. I hear tell the Frigate be needing a Gunner. Truth be told, for an assignment to this...

    Vintage Syrian. MMMMM... Tasty!

Rich, warm, smooth, creamy, sweet and spicy. All in seemingly near perfect proportions. I'd probably detract from the experience if I tried to pontificate further, but you should check it out if you haven't. Happy day to all. Jay :nana:

    German Militia Pipe??

I really like my little Baraccini pocket pipe. I wanted to get another for back-up, but didn't want to spend the $35 that P&C wanted. So, I found this one on eBay along with a second pipe and I got both for $30. The other is listed as a "German Militia Pipe". I find no such creature on a Google...

First impression: Generic German Briar & Black Frigate

Everything I've read about Black Frigate has told me that I WILL like it. So much that my normal restraint and frugality needed not apply when I got down to ordering some. So, I got 3-8oz cans for my fledgling cellar and a 2oz tin for immediate consumption. (my spellchecker says there is no E...

Flakes and cakes and ribbons (oh, my?)

Most of my piping so far has been 50g tins of ribbon cut. Easy to use and repeatable in technique. My one flake can has been a challenge. McClelland Red & Black. I've rubbed some out, scissor cut into tiny pieces against the grain and cubed some. I suspect that maybe the black is too moist yet...

    Black Frigate. Uber Noob question>

What do I do with this brick of tobacco? How best does one process it? Hurry back with your replies! I got a new briar just for the occasion and I've been waiting too long to try it already!! Thanks. Jay :nana:

    Scored two eBay pipes today.

Inexpensive, but like new and attractive pipes. Let me know if you have any experience with either. PIAZZOLLA Borkum Riff Pipe made by Stanwell Thanks. Jay :nana:

Good timing? Bad timing? My first bout of TAD.

So, last night, I read a very long and informative pipe tobacco related site now on the "way back machine". After that, I decided to put together my Noobie Cellar Starter wish list. Today, I was out running errands when I got the P&C email to my phone about a 2 day (up to) 25% off sale...

What's the purpose of a stinger?

Too early.... Not enough caffeine... Search skills impaired.... Thanks... Jay :nana:

    Share your favorite Balkans.

I'm just reading up on different tobacco's and I think I need to try some "Balkan" blends. Please point me in the right direction. Thanks. Jay :nana:

    What is an Army Mount?

As an army veteran, I must know! Is it essential that I get one? (Enablers, help me out here) Thanks. Jay :nana:

Viking Classic acquisition. Little info online.

Picked this up at the B&M today. Online info indicates this is a lower tier product from Bjarne Nielsen, who is apparently well regarded by pipe people. B&M guy said Bjarne Nielsen is gone and the name is sinking slowly (or something to that effect), so they were blowing these out on discount...

    My Fancy New Custom Rack!

This evening, I got out my scissors and crafted this fine pipe rack. Let me know if you want me to make you one, or if you need the detailed instructions on how to build your own. Jay :nana:

First impression: Viking Classic and McClelland's Red and Black

Online ordering is hard to beat, but the local B&M needs some love, too. In that spirit, I devised my errand route today to pass by a shop in Austin, Pipe World. A nice young man listened to me babble and offered helpful but not pushy input, so I rewarded him by opening my oft-unbreachable...
