I popped this tin an hour ago. This tin was acquired from P&C as part of a "perique step ladder" sampler. H&H Viprati was recommended as the mellow perique, this one as the medium and Dunhill's Elizabethan as the full flavored example.
Since I recently finished off the Viprati, I moved on, in...
I've been looking for a nice Kaywoodie specimen, just to say I have one. Doubt I'll find nicer than NOS!
Still has the original $6.95 sticker on the bit in one of the photos.
Anyone with secret knowledge on dating these things, please share.
Thanks.

This was my one Independence Day purchase.
Brown Falcon with slightly bent bit and meerschaum lined smooth Bulldog bowl.
I haven't fired it up yet. Anything one should know when using meerschaum or breaking it in?
Thanks.
Acrylic, Vulcanite, Ebonite, reeds, bone, wood....
Can we start sort of a primer here?
Pros and cons of each material?
Proper care?
Facts and opinions welcome.
Thanks.
Idle hands, and all that...
Dig out your flat cap, if you have one. Grab your shades. Stand in front of your favorite tree. Show us how you keep it smokey!
Keeping it smokey in my Savinelli 606 with some Vintage Syrian...
I just had my first taste of Gawith, Hoggarth & Co's North Star.
Many of the reviews I read claim there is a Lakeland component.
I've read a bit, supposedly a floral, maybe "soapy" quality?
Tobaccoreviews indicates no flavoring to this blend. I do steer towards non-aro's and I didn't seem to get...
I've been sitting on this pipe (not literally) for a while, waiting for a suitable tobacco for christening.
When I got my goodie box in from buroak's sale, I decided the North Star would do.
North Star tin note was nada. I seem to just not get tin notes like other people do. With Virginia in...
Despite mindless brand loyalty or "fan-boy-ism", there are sometimes products that just impress or stand above in performance.
I must give credit where due. For instance, even though I have strong tightwad tendencies, I will shell out the Benjamins required to keep myself in Red Wing boots. They...
A few of you may recall my happy post about scoring a Bianca 606 and a Roma 111 a while ago.
You may also recall my lament soon thereafter, discovering the nasty "car air freshener" aroma embedded in each.
Many of you answered my pleas for help and I'm happy to now share that both are functional...
I unmoored the Frigate during me now-normal night time sleep intermission and slid from the pier into the darkness.
The moon was shrouded in partial obscurity, leaving just enough visibility to avoid the array of lesser dinghies haphazardly tied off between me-self and the open sea.
Going slow...
Hatred is a strong word. Let's use abhorrence.
I bought a used Baraccini pipe on eBay for a few bucks. Smelled like a chemically induced pseudo fruit, like that bad overpowering "air freshener" smell in the bathroom at the mall.
Did the salt treatment. Did the coffee grounds thing. Smell...
Yesterday, I jarred up a pound of Old Dark Fired and loaded up a bowl from the crumbs left over. It was my first remarkable burly endeavor.
Just now, I had a bowl of Viprati. I'm about 2/3 through the tin and it's become noticeably drier. Not crunchy dry, just not as moist as when opened.
A well...
As I go through my rotation and also try different tobaccos in different pipes, I've noted at least two instances of getting less flavor from the cob than from the briar.
Is this an occurrence anyone else has had?
FYI, the cob is an MM Tom Sawyer. The tobaccos are John Cotton's #1 and Balkan...
Currently a few weeks into my piping adventure, I now have a half dozen pipes in the rack and as many opened tins in rotation.
I'm beginning to discover how different pipes and leaves can interact.
In previous postings, I first tried the Viprati in a Stanwell 185 and some McClelland's Red &...
Dude decided either he didn't like pipe smoking or he didn't like Savinelli.
Got Bianca 606 and Roma 111, with boxes and a glass pipe rest. Used, barely. You can still see the briar color in the bowls.
I'm doing the happy dance...

Jay :nana:
Good day, all.
I just got two pounds of HH Flake, Old Dark Fired and Bold Kentucky.
Each is in a dense, vacuum sealed package the size of a small book.
Since the seal is good, should I drop them into the cellar "as is" or hack them up into jar sized chunks?
Since they come vacuum sealed from the...
Got a better deal through "Make an offer" than the page shows.
I'm starting to like bigger chunks of wood to grab on to while smoking.
How do you think it'll smoke...
Well, Mrs jaytex and I both have the day off. She's getting g the manicure with a friend and I'm at a local watering hole dealing with $2 frozen margaritas. Reached the "need a smoke" phase and I went out back for some Balkan Saseini in the cob. Tasty, until I hit the margerita. I'm impaired and...
