No one would argue that eliminating illegal trade in elephant ivory is a worthwhile goal- Many pipemakers in the US use "Pre-ban" ivory for shank extensions or stem details- purchased from dealers who go to great pains to make sure that what they sell meets the rules. Pre-ban means that the...
Just had the butcher block workbench top come in today- I'll hang 4 motors for buffing and shaping below, my Foredom tool and stem shaping area above....By the way- does anyone have a high res picture of a couple of antique tobacco tins? I'm going to have them printed on canvas, framed and hung...
This was an unusual request- a guy sent me a picture of a Dublin with a square shank and wanted something more in the style that I make...Here is the result....I'm kinda liking using a combination of blasted and smooth areas...
All you guys know by know how much fun I'm having with my new blaster....Just finished one of my RC Snapping Turtles this afternoon- thought the blast and smooth combination worked well together....Cumberland stem on this one...
Thought I would share my first YouTube video with you guys. This is my technique for drilling on the lathe- one thing you may not have seen is the use of a laser level as a visual depth gauge- let's me be very accurate without ever taking a measurement. Could be easily adapted to a drill press...
After butchering a few test pieces of briar trying different settings on my new sandblaster, decided to blast this Dublin with B&W ebony inlay...Thought it came out kinda nice...:)
Making some progress on the shop/mancave... The floor is about half finished, sandblaster and lathe are running. Next week I have two 7' butcher block bench tops coming in for the workbenches.
Does anyone have a couple of high resolution pictures of antique tobacco tins? I want to have them...

Next step in my new pipe shop/man cave is a sandblast setup- just got this 16CFM 5Hp 80 Gal Compressor in today...A little smaller than I wanted, but it should get the job done for now...
It's been a really painful process, but finally! We're closing on our new house Tuesday. Started work designing my shop- It's 585 sq feet and will have 1.75" thick maple countertops, industrial sandblast rig, big screen tv, leather couch, and beer fridge....For the flooring, I'm using Race Deck...
Just had the 16' POD that's been in my yard picked up and moved to storage for a few days. I've moved maybe a dozen times in my life- this is by far the most stressful. Been packing tools and household stuff for 10 days- left most of the furniture behind for our vacation rental guests who arrive...
Trying a few variations on the reverse calabashes- thought this was fairly interesting. There is actually a double chamber in the reverse calabash part- looks like a long football, with 2/3 of it in the shank, and 1/3 in the stem itself. The inlay in the stem is Goncalo Alves- a little surprised...
It's really interesting how a lot of influences at the Vegas Show have changed what I'm doing on pipes. This was kind of interesting- the first time trying a stem with pink ivorywood..Thought it turned out kinda nice...
It was a great afternoon- fired up the Big Green Egg to cook a tri-tip, loaded a bowl with some Esoterica Stonehaven that arrived this week, and popped the tops on a couple of incredible 9% ales. I had the misfortune to reach the bottom of the second ale and the pipe at the same time...A...
Greta and I having a great time at a fundraiser yesterday for the Child Protection Center of Sarasota held at the Ritz...Everyone smoking cigars (or pipes) and drinking excellent Scotch for an organization doing some great work in Sarasota ....Nice way to spend a Friday afternoon...
Didn't cook a turkey, but just finished this one over the long Thanksgiving weekend...Tried a few new things here- Cocobolo and Ebonite stem...a little tricky drilling with my curved drill bit...Had a good time with this one....
Ended up smokin' the Peace Pipe ... Actually, that's Greta's daughter Vanessa- she's a bartender at a local tiki bar- sat outside in 50 degree weather and enjoyed some drinks and a few bowls...
