    Peterson Deluxe 9S Restoration

Back in May, I ended up buying out what was left of a pipe repair shop for $150 which included 4 motors, French wheels, a couple of T-head tenon cutters($250 each new!), buffs, compounds, and a few miscellaneous dirty pipe parts that I ignored...Took a second look at the pipe parts a couple of...

Perfect Way To End The Day

Busy day in the shop- finished three hand-cut stems, tweaked some details on a couple of pipes, and roughed out a little Group 2 with black bamboo- a variation on one I finished last week...Ended up on the deck with a St. Pauli Girl, Solani Flake, and a couple of T-Bones on the grill...(I know-...

Southern Italy Trip- What Should I Buy?

My lovely wife and I are returning to southern Italy for our 1 year anniversary. Along the way, we'll be visiting my briar supplier and trying to meet some artisan carvers in the area. My question- I will be scouring every out of the way pipe shop and flea market for estate pipes. What would you...

    Manta Ray

Had some fun with this one- It's a cross-grain horn with Cumberland stem...somewhat inspired by the shape of a Manta Ray....just finished it tonight...time for a beer!

    Three Of My Favorite Things

Had a group of 12 over last night with 4 of us lighting pipes up and enjoying some Wessex flake Harris brought. Three racks of ribs cooked on the Big Green Egg, some Italian sausage, chicken, Pyrats Rum, and some great company made for an excellent night...(OK- that's more than three of my...

    Late Night In The Shop

But finally finished this pipe- I seem to be on a hot streak with great briar this week...Thought this one came out pretty well- 6" overall. Biggest challenge was keeping the stem really short while keeping it thin in the bite zone- measures 3.9 mm behind the button...Time for a beer!

    Smooooth Grain

Just finishing another pipe this afternoon- I like being able to use the black bamboo with a natural finish on the briar. One of the nicest pieces of briar I've seen in the past couple of months....

A Small Pipe For My Wife

My wife has been asking me to make her a pipe for weeks and I finally finished this one today with a little bamboo and ivory....This is REALLY small- bowl diameter 5/8 x 1 3/16 deep. 7" overall length- design is very loosely adapted from a Dunhill Lady's pipe from the 50's. Might have to do some...

Pipes And Tobacco For A Rehearsal Dinner

This one's interesting- I have a niece being married in September in Oxford Mississippi. We'll fly there before the start of a three week vacation in Italy...with frequent detours to some great Italian pipe shops...But I digress...We'll be going to an outdoor rehearsal dinner at a church...

    Just Off The Bench

I think this is the third variation on a Reverse Calabash Snapping Turtle...Liked the grain...one of those hard decisions on whether to leave it smooth with a few sandpits visible or to do a sectional blast on the turtle head portion...

    An Acorn & Reverse Calabash

Finished a couple of pipes this weekend before the heat finally got to me...the third will have to wait for next week...Time to jump on the Vespa and head for the beach!

    Pipes In Progress

Thought I'd show a picture of some pipes I'm working on this weekend. The center one is complete- a new version of the Reverse Calabash Snapping Turtle I did a couple of weeks ago. The lower left was a three color stain- the stem is mounted and ready for final shaping. The one on the right has...

    An Excellent Night...

After a great dinner at one of my favorite Italian restaurants, enjoyed some Solani Flake in one of my bamboo & briar pipes (Thanks to Harris for the flake!) with my fabulous wife Greta...and my dog Dolce just checking it out....

Smoking A Pipe Outside In Florida

If you live in Florida, you expect 90 degrees and 90% humidity this time of year. Harris joined me for a smoke and dinner tonight. The key to a happy experience is great flake, Deep Woods Off to discourage the no-see-ums, a portable air conditioner blowing on the deck, and my fabulous wife Greta...

A New Pipe In Black Bamboo

I do have a fondness for bamboo shanks...and especially black bamboo. Tried something a little different on this one and stained the nodes of the bamboo the same top color as the pipe...

    Happiness From Italy

There's nothing I love more than coming home to find my shipment of briar from Southern Italy sitting on my doorstep...54 pieces of the good stuff...:) Just in time for the weekend...

    G.O.B.- Grumpy Old Bast'dz Only

Given the prevalence of random rants today, I thought it would be appropriate to set up a topic specifically for the G.O.Bs (Grumpy Old Bast'dz) of the world. In addition, if you're a curmudgeon, under-the-bridge troll, or just a truly unpleasant human being with poor personal hygiene, this...

    It Started As An Eskimo...

OK, I was in the mood to try a variation on an Eskimo, but the briar had a completely different idea. As soon as I turned the top on the lathe, a flaw reared it's ugly head...and then I started chasing it and ended up in a completely different direction...This is one of those strange cases where...

    Chasing The Better Button

The biggest challenge I've run into over the past few weeks is really not shaping the pipes, but cutting the stems from rod stock. Thanks to a little excellent advice from Harris last weekend, I'm slowly improving that part of my pipes. The pictures tell the tale- the first one is a hand-cut...

A Perfect Evening With The Pipe & Company

Had the good fortune to have Harris over this evening. Enjoyed a fine wine, good company, a fabulous Risotto del Mare cooked by my lovely wife Greta, and several hours of good conversation over a bowl of the most amazing flake tobacco I could ever have imagined (Harris- if you ever should die an...
