    Zack & Greta's Grand Tour Of Europe….

Ok, Flying out of Miami to Paris tonight for a couple of weeks of drinking, eating , and piping in France and Italy… My question - what are your favorite pipe shops or pipe makers in the following areas- Paris- Florence- Tuscany- Porto Fino- Cinque de Terra- Milano… We'll keep you posted...

Bending Black Bamboo For A Morta Dublin...

My first attempt at ending a black bamboo stem for this morta and ivory pipe... Had a pretty good bend in the clamps, but had a lot of springback- I'll try it again with more steam and several days in the clamps...Still kept a subtle curve that looked pretty good... A simple and ugly bending...

    Naked Briar...

Most of my pipes I either sandblast or use a contrast stain....Thought this was a nice combination of briar, horn, and SEM Cumberland...a meaty little apple at around 66 grams

    Balkan Sobranie In Stock!

Milan Tobacco has it...for at least the next 15 minutes...limit 1 tin....

    70% UN Tax On Tobacco

This is one I definitely didn't see coming. The US, Switzerland, and Indonesia were not signers to the accord- not that that will matter because it looks like the tax will apply to the manufacturer in the country of origin.... UN Legislation on Tobacco Tax

    Just Off The Bench....

Finally back in the shop after the Southern Fried Pipe Show...Thought this was fairly interesting- a contrast stain with Pink Ivorywood ring, and Cumberland stem.....

    The Southern Fried Pipe Show

I thought I'd share a couple of thoughts on the Southern Fried Pipe Show held in Nashville last weekend. So far this year, I've attended Vegas, Chicago, and the KC show. This was a radically different show on several fronts. We started out at Bruce Weaver's place on Friday night for a great...

Woodcarving Of My Grandfather And His Pipe

Visiting my parents this week- my father who was an accomplished woodcarver carved this picture of my grandfather who was never seen without a Dr. Grabow and a tin of Prince Albert. I'm sure I got my love of carving from my father and the pipe from my grandfather...this piece will be going in my...

A Block Of Briar, 30 Sheets Of Sandpaper, And 4 Months

I usually work on a pipe from start to finish- normal working time might 8-15 hours. This one was an exception- I started it just after the Chicago Show and spent a 3-4 hours a week bringing it along. I'm not sure I'll ever do this again-

    A Panama At The Beach....

If you guys saw the post a few weeks ago about the $25k Panama hats, you know I've really been wanting to buy a Panama Hat. Finally saw one yesterday at Tommy Bahama- out of all the ones they had, it was the only hand-woven Ecuadorean hat. Next step is to get a nice band to replace the Tommy...

The Whale- Who Says You Can't Go Back...

You guys who have been patiently watching my progress with pipemaking since last year saw a design a few months ago I called the whale- it had incredible grain but was a bit on the pudgy side and the shaping a little soft. I've been hauling this thing around and looking at it every time I walked...

Morta, Bamboo, & Tortoise Amber Pipe

This is getting to be one of my favorite combinations- just finished this one out this afternoon. A biggun' at 7", but only around 46 grams.... Taking a bunch of pipes to Nashville in 10 days for the Southern Fried Pipe Show...Anyone else going?

Astley #44- Tin Note With A Hint Of Aged Horse Stable?

Popped a fresh tin of Astleys #44 yesterday, stuck my nose in it and was struck by the complexities of the tin note- fresh cut hay, a little woody, and a faint whiff of...mature horse sh**t?. Despite my misgivings- Fired it up with one charring light, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I called Harris...

    Evolution Of Blasting....

It's really interesting seeing the variation in blasts ranging from Cannoy to Cook. I've been making a few small changes since my first blasts in January. I thought it might be interesting to see how small changes make a big difference- My rig is a single stage Kobalt 80 gallon 5hp with 16cfm at...

    Chasing Stonehaven...

At this point, I'm down to the final crumbs of my Stonehaven Stash...except for 1 aged bag Harris gave me for my birthday. And although I enjoy a variety of other fine flake tobaccos, my wife Greta turns up her nose at the thought of anything but Stonehaven. To prepare for this ultimate...

A Cherry Wood Sitter For Labor Day....

Spent a little quality beach time with Greta on the weekend, so today was strictly a shop day- finished out my first Cherrywood Sitter w/ Bamboo and Cumberland Stem...this one's heading to the Nashville show... ...and here it looked like fresh out of the blaster...

    Just Off The Bench....

This was an interesting one...had a piece of 3 knuckle bamboo only 2" long....combined a smooth bowl with a sectional sandblast on the stem, the bamboo, and a tortoise amber stem....about 6.25" and 58 grams....A real challenge to tie it all together....

    Pipe Smoking At The Beach....

One of our favorite things on a Sunday afternoon is smoking a pipe at the beach in Sarasota. Definitely found it just a bit challenging getting the thing lit with the wind gusting over 20....Fortunately, Rotary Navy tends to stay lit once you fire it...

    Black Bamboo Beetle In Morta

Finished this one out a week ago- Love the way the Morta and ivory work together... Hard to find much shop time lately because of work...but it helps keep me sane...

Would You Pay $25,000 For A Panama Hat?

OK, neither would I...but I am about to get a fairly nice one in maybe the $500 range. Does anyone have any recommendations of a good place to buy one?- (I'd rather deal as close to the maker as I can get and avoid 3 levels of middleman) (...and I know...I know- for that $25,000 you could buy 25...
