*** What Are You Smoking?*** (November 2018)

After discussing this blend with a friend, I decided to take one for the team and give it a try. So, this evening, I have Middleton’s Cherry Blend in an English clay. This is not, necessarily, the devil weed that some would have you believe. It’s not a goopy, over-the-top aromatic. The added...

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (November 2018)

My first taste of Dan Tobacco’s London Blend No.250 in an Old Rarity billiard thanks to a generous 2004 sample received from a friend. What a pleasant evening blend! A bit of plum, a bit of spice and a bit of smokey Latakia. Very nice. Two fingers of Bulleit Rye, neat, alongside because it’s...

The Wally Frank wood cutter clay says that it’s never too early to start scouting for a Christmas tree. I say that we should think bigger. We’ll discuss over a bowl of Sutliff’s Private Stock Golden Age.

Dr. Grabow Grand Duke 36S Restoration [Pic Heavy]

True, but then you end up with a tenon that is horn shaped instead of cylindrical which creates new problems. Plus, you need to be sure to round of the corners of the expanded slot or they will act like the cutting edge of a drill bit every time the stem is twisted in or out.

Dr. Grabow Grand Duke 36S Restoration [Pic Heavy]

@aldecaker: This one was made sometime between 1990 and 1996. Grabow transitioned to the aluminum tenons sometime in the early '90s if I'm not mistaken and they've used them ever since except for some recent Ajustomatic resurrections. I hate them. Metal push tenons are one of the worst ideas for...

Dr. Grabow Grand Duke 36S Restoration [Pic Heavy]

Not sure. I work in batches. So, a little work on this one, a little work on that one and so on. Maybe somewhere around 3-4 hours of actual hands-on time in total, but that's broken up into segments. Could be a little more or a little less, but that's the ballpark.

Dr. Grabow Grand Duke 36S Restoration [Pic Heavy]

There are certain rules that have to be followed when dealing with highly collectible pipes and rarities. Those rules don’t necessarily apply to a pipe that has a value defined by something other than collectibility. Of course, you still want to stick as close as possible to the intention of the...

Dr. Grabow Grand Duke 36S Restoration [Pic Heavy]

Anyone that knows me and my pipe smoking affinities knows that I have a warm affection for the good Dr. Grabow’s ability to deliver a straightforward smoking experience. I don’t often get the chance to work with one though. So, it was a treat when this Grand Duke came across the bench.

    Meer Display, Would You?

In general, I resist the urge to openly display pipes. Dust and light are not kind to pipes. I prefer to keep them in a cabinet behind closed doors. Sure, I might not impress the neighbors without a nice, easily viewable display, but I know that they're in there and that's all that matters to me.
