*** What Are You Smoking?*** (May 2018)

Frog Morton’s Cellar in a 1915-192x BBB Umbria. I should have collected more of these stave cubes when FMC was still available. They could be made into a nice, little chess board.

Lots of nice pipes on display above. Well done, gents! I’m burning Sutliff Mardi Gras in a Mark Twain cob to please the weather gods in an appeal for them to release us from the rain. It’s been a week. Enough already!

Half and Half in a Wally Frank tasting pipe because I haven’t had enough coffee to be bothered with anything more complicated.

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (May 2018)

The smoke for tonight is Newminster No.306 English Oriental in an IMP paneled horn meer carved by Mustafa Albayrak. A cup of Lapsang souchong on the side and William Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices performed by the Choir of St. John’s College in the background. I think I could stay in this moment...

Congrats! That looks like a real beauty. Vote seconded for larger photos posted when you have them.

    Help Identifying this Pipe

An old clay pipe. There were countless numbers of them made back in the day and it's almost impossible to be more specific without any identifiable markings. It's likely that it originally has a reed stem.

Gawith Hoggarth Dark Bird’s Eye in a Missouri Meerschaum / Morgan Pipes cob cigar as I listen to the thunder of rain upon the roof.

Milan Tobacco’s “Our” Mixture 965 in the Anan Pillai double acorn. I’ve never understood why these pipes are called “reverse calabash.” Don’t they work in exactly the same way as a regular calabash, i.e., tobacco chamber in the front, expansion chamber in the rear? “Quasibash” would maybe suit...

    Pre-WWII Comoy’s Virgin Briar #127

The vast majority of pre-WWII Wally Frank pipes are Comoy-made. Some have Comoy's shape number stamping, some have Wally Frank's own number stamping and some have no shape stamp at all. Likewise with the COM. Some even have the Comoy COM stamp on the stem. Here's a Wally Frank Jumbo that's...

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (May 2018)

I thought I should finally start breaking in this P&C / MM IPSD 2018 goodie bag cob. So, I’m burning some 2006 Hearth & Home Anniversary Kake while cleaning up some pipes and listening to a discussion on exoplanets. There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your...

Stem-Making & Stummel Refinishing Videos are Up and Running

Watched 'em yesterday while working in the shop. At times, I paused the video to concentrate on work. At other times, I paused work to concentrate on the video. So, thanks for killing any semblance of productivity, G-man. Seriously though, that's a great set of videos. Thanks for putting them...

Show Off Your BBB Pipes Here

Another American-made BBB: 1915-192(?) BBB Umbria... I'm currently waiting on the arrival of an 1889 Louis Blumfeld meerschaum pipe as well. It should be somewhere over the Atlantic now.

Should I Smoke My Antique Pipes?

If you view the pipes purely as investments, leaving them in unsmoked condition will give you the best value. If, on the other hand, you view them as instruments of pleasure, smoke them and enjoy them.

    Keeping Bands Shiny

You're much better off using a soft, microfiber cloth to remove the residue rather than a paper towel. Paper towels have abrasive qualities and they will dull the polish on soft metals like gold or silver.

    Dunhill White Spot Drama

No, those are totally made from rare stegotetrabelodon ivory and obsidian harvested from the grounds around Pompeii. I know because I heard it from a guy.
