    In Defense of Codger Blends

Besides, don’t most tobacco threads here end up being an argument in favor of OTC blends? No matter what the OPs ask for—asparagus-flavored latakia blends or unadulterated Virginia flakes—it seems the answers always include Granger, Half and Half, and Prince Albert. ;)

    NASPC

Does that mean, though, that the content cannot be edited—for grammar, punctuation, length? I do realize that the group is built on the work of volunteers. But given how many pipesmokers are involved in publishing, surely there would be a member qualified to provide editorial services. It isn’t...

    Cringle Flake 2022

Not a fanboy at all. I haven’t tried it and won’t; it’s not something I have any interest in. I was commenting only on the content of the review, not the blend itself.

    NASPC

I had a similar experience, getting only two issues out of the four. Since publication was so sporadic, I’d actually forgotten about it. Despite the fact that each issue is fairly packed with content, it’s content that very much reads like a “fan” publication. I recall some “Letters to the...

    The Beast

It’s a small-batch blend built on a high percentage of a little-grown leaf requiring extensive processing. There are mass-produced blends that cost $17 for 2oz or even $17 for 50g. Plus, given that the majority of the tobacco here is perique, I’m guessing that a little will go a long way; you’re...

    Age

I started smoking on my 18th birthday, the first day I could legally purchase tobacco in Illinois. Because I loved the packaging—and probably the magazine ads—I bought a pack of Kool Milds. I knew I didn’t want to allow smoking to become an addiction, so I knew I didn’t want to inhale as a...

How Many Flakes Per Oz PS Luxury Navy Flake

Agreed. I sold off some of my cellar about six years ago: $6,000 of tobacco was sitting on a single shelf (5-feet wide, 3-feet deep) in the basement. Of course, that’s all relative to what you’re storing. $6,000 in bulk blends will take up far more room than $6,000 in tinned blends.

    Plastic in Capstan

You need to report this to the company, not just post about it here. Send them photos of what you found, describe the situation, and include all of the packaging/lot codes from the back of the tin. They will want to be aware of this situation so they can take steps to prevent it happening again...

Exploring a Blender’s Entire Product Line

But, see, the “trial and error” would be part of the point of this experiment. Going through a brand’s tins would force me to try blends I would otherwise shun or just ignore. So I certainly don’t anticipate liking everything. But I would expect to learn something from every tin. I’m not...

    Cringle Flake 2022

I’m curious how long the OP has been smoking a pipe and what his prior experience with blends has been. To complain that a Virginia/perique is spicy seems to suggest that he isn’t familiar with perique. To say the tin note is “feces“—three times--suggests that he’s unfamiliar with tobacco aromas...

Exploring a Blender’s Entire Product Line

I have never heard of anyone talking about C&D in relationship to Virginias. To me, they’re the House Built on Burley. So, while this may not be the thread for it (or maybe it is), I’d love to hear more about your experience with the company’s Virginia blends and which ones you think are worth...

    In Defense of Codger Blends

Honestly? I’d switch to cigars. I’d rather smoke machine-made Dutch Masters than be stuck with an OTC pipe tobacco for the rest of my life. I haven’t tried one yet that I could smoke for more than half a bowl. But burley is my least-favorite leaf; OTC brands love to use cheap, mulched, and to me...

Exploring a Blender’s Entire Product Line

Ashton is definitely a possibility. But so are MacBaren and Rattray’s, Dan Tobacco. I’m curious about all of the “new” McConnell blends that are replicating the discontinued Dunhill blends (unless they are those blends but McConnell didn’t buy the rights to the original names). Not sure how...

Exploring a Blender’s Entire Product Line

I wouldn’t plan on limiting this to non-aromatics, though. I’d have to be all-in on everything.

Exploring a Blender’s Entire Product Line

Hmmm… Gotta say, Seattle Pipe Club wouldn’t have been on my radar. Ever. I’ll check them out…although I really can’t enjoy perique if it’s more than a whisper, and the blends I know them for are pretty perique-y. (I know I’ll probably have to at least try some perique-forward blends if I do this...

    Recent TAD Pick-Ups

After telling myself I was going to hold off on any tobacco purchases in March, I’ve somehow managed to order the following: Two Friends Celtic Mist, an 8oz and 2oz tin Two Friends Heritage, an 8oz and 2oz tin Two Friends Valle Crucis, an 8oz and 2oz tin Two Friends Redwood, 2oz (all of the...

Exploring a Blender’s Entire Product Line

It’s been a while since I’ve opened a tin of a new-to-me blend, and I’m thinking it’s about time I started exploring again. That got me thinking about picking a blender/brand with a manageable range of blends and going through them all, one by one, just for the education/adventure. There’ll be...

Your Thoughts On McClellands Grand Orientals

Unfortunately, I think the only one I have any experience with is the range of GL Pease blends that came out in 2004 and explored the use of an incredible Syrian latakia crop through a number of different blends, including: Mephisto, Raven’s Wing, Renaissance, and Bohemian Scandal. This was a...

Your Thoughts On McClellands Grand Orientals

If anyone’s interested, it appears that there are just eight blends in the Grand Orientals series: Black Sea Sokhoum Classic Samsun Drama Reserve Katerini Classic Smyrna No. 1 Yenice Agonya Yenidje Highlander (the only blend in the series with latakia) Yenidje Supreme @fightnhampster: I’d love...
