    Comparing tobacco taste to food

Food isn’t always the first flavor association I make - but it’s definitely a great reference point for taste correlation (?) For instance, some McClelland VA’s have a flavor profile that was escaping description for me til I settled on Cola - yep, that was it! And when I smoke aged Hoyo de...

*** What Are You Smoking? *** (October, 2019)

Final bowl of MM965 from this tin - crispy at this point - which suits this blend just fine! Peterson Jeckyl & Hyde billiard.

*** What Are You Smoking? *** (October, 2019)

Bengal Slices in an EA Carey billiard. 2nd bowl, and, while slightly better, still disappointing. I'm giving this one 2 more bowls ands then it hits the back burner. Maybe the topping just doesn't click with me?

What is the best holiday blend?

+1 on Two Friends English Chocolate. Otherwise, I just seem to strike out when trying aromatics of pretty much any type. Can’t smoke in the house, so a special holiday tin usually just means treating myself to something rare from the cellar... Hmmm, there’s an ancient tin of Rattray’s Jock’s...

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (September 2019)

Back into the 90’s here on the southeast coast of NC :( I was just beginning to settle in to Fall temps. Oh well, Tuskegee Airmen in this well grained Alpha. Sweet tea keeping it cool.

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (September 2019)

Maybe one more bowl of MM965 left in the tin after the one I’m smoking currently in an Ashton Pebble Grain Pot. So many blends I “need” to get to in my cellar, but I’m so tempted to keep 965 open and ready all the time. So good... Maybe I need to break my 12 tins open or less “rule” ;)

    High End Pipes vs Artisans.

I don’t know... in reality, the $200-$400 is really the limiting factor, along with a smaller pool of artisan estates to choose from. I own Von Erck, Jody Davis, Llarrysson among others, and I own Dunhill, Castello and Ashton among the higher end “production” pipes. Pick a day and I’ll tell you...

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (September 2019)

C&D Bayou Morning Flake, fully rubbed & dried in a Bjarne egg.

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (September 2019)

Very first bowl in this ‘70’s Alpha (can’t tell era by the design can you?!) 2017 Pease Robusto - hands down the best bowl of this blend I’ve had to this point. Would never have expected that, but this thing is smoking like a dream - just a touch of new (old) pipe flavor. Very pleasant!

    Putting Stuff in Jars!

Due to the smell out of the package, I remove the lid, wave the jar in the air a few times and the smell disappears - fill & cap. I then spin three times with my left eye closed, bow to the east, ask for favor from the god of the leaf and spit twice on the carpet... Nah, just the first part.

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (September 2019)

Another beautiful NC morning. Yale Dropout (2:1:1 - C&D Yale Mixture, Pease Samarra, Dunhill the Aperitif) in an EA Carey billiard.

How Many Bowls a Day Do You Smoke?

2 bowls a day plus 1 cigar some days. A 3 bowl day is a rarity - and usually fatigues my palate quite a bit.

    Cigar types - How close?

Hi David - I’m actually smoking a bowl of Robusto as I type. I am an avowed cigar lover with a humidor of thousands, and over 2 decades of regular partaking (decade + aged Havana’s, Dominicans & Hondurans to newly released and everything in between) All of that to qualify what I’m about to say...

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (September 2019)

Pease Robusto 2017 fits well into this Moretti - and this nearly 90 degree late September day on the NC coast. Been a few weeks since I managed a 3 bowl day - fitting bold end!

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (September 2019)

New tin of Bengal Slices just opened. Crumbled into a trusty Ashton Pebble Grain Pot. So far... underwhelmed.

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (September 2019)

Comoy Cask No.11 in an EA Carey billiard. Coffee and watching an Osprey working the pond.

    The Almost $900 Pipe...

Nice score!! If we could get Alphas consistently pulling $900, I might be willing to part with a few of them!

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (September 2019)

C&D Bayou Morning Flake in this Peterson Aran 606 Pot. Incredible Birdseye on half of this pipe - the other half got beat with an ugly stick!

    Favorite Cornell & Diehl Blends?

Lots of very good blends and such a catalogue of choices! Good Morning and Tuskegee Airmen are at the top of my list, followed closely by Bayou Morning Flake and Night Train. I also have pounds of their bright va Flake and Turkish Ismir for building out my own blends or mixing with others that...
