    Cleaning Blocked Pipe ?

A straight piece of galvanized baling wire (maybe 12 gauge or so) run through the shank usually loosens up a difficult clog. Then a tapered pipe cleaner. In rare cases, I‘ve also used a long drill bit attached to a hand held pin vise drill chuck (it’s like a screwdriver handle) which you can...

    Brazilian Pipe Makers, Anyone?

At the Chicago Pipe Show, two Brazilian pipe makers really impressed me: Luiz Lavos and Emiliano. Here are two of their pipes I purchased. The Lavos billiard has a silver accent and the Emiliano bamboo has an exotic wood adornment. Just incredible detailing and they smoke great, too. Both of...

***What Are You Smoking, June 2025?***

Smoking some Savinelli Jupiter in a long stem Adam Davidson apple that arrived today. I saw this pipe on Adam’s table at the Chicago Pipe Show and when I got home regretted not having purchased it. Luckily, it was still available.

    Wind Caps for Cooler Smoking?

I have long been a big fan of windcaps, including having a NYC pipe shop install one on the first “good“ pipe I bought on a visit there around 1988. Now I use them for a more utilitarian purpose: to make sure a hot ember does not fly out and burn a hole in a pair of my suit pants.

    Jim's Briarworks Smokehouse Review.

I ended up buying a few jars. I opened one, spread it out in the tobacco tray and rejarred it for a month. I’m smoking it today for the first time and am a bit underwhelmed. I love the tin note and the cut, but it is a bit mild for palate. I was hoping it would taste as smoky as it smells. It’s...

***What Are You Smoking, June 2025?***

I decided to smoke the last of this jarred Plum Pudding in two long-stemmed classics: a smooth billiard stamped from the iconic Wally Frank shop in NYC, and one by the great Tim West of Columbus, Ohio.

I Hope You Hate Deoxidizing Vulcanite Stems As Much As I Do

You did a great job. I try to wipe down any vulcanite stem each time I use the pipe and add some obsidian oil to avoid oxidation. I lean towards SEM vulcanite now in my new pipes. SEM is known for its resistance to hazing and discoloration. My teeth just don’t agree with acrylic as I get older.

Former’s flake stuffed in a large capacity Tim Beaumont Pappa Bear egg. Tim has been using a lot of soft stem material that I love for clenching. SEM Vulcanite is known for its resistance to hazing and discoloration.

Loaded up my go-to Drucquer & Sons Loch Ness by GLP in a Tom Eltang canted Apple with what I call his “dinosaur spine” carving. When I saw the pipe in Chicago I immediately wanted it, but alas when I reached for my wallet I realized I had left it in my hotel room. Tom’s wife Pia, who I had never...

Radice pipes might give the most bang for the buck of all the Italian factory pipes. I really love them.

Some C&D House Reserve in a pencil stem Ser Jacopo Spongia. The House Reserve blend is sold only in brick and mortar stores and cannot be purchased online. It was a little bonus to shops for selling the C&D line.

C&D’s da Vinci in an Adam Davidson “sliced” apple bamboo. This is really a tasty blend of Latakia, Virginia flake and Burley. The lighter is a Savinelli Miele.

Perusing baseball box scores is a lost art. Few things more relaxing to me, also.
