    Stems, Stems, Stems

When I first started smoking pipes, an amber stem was standard on most meerschaum pipes.

A Real Honest To Gosh Snob, But Proud Of It!

I don't think you can call a person a "snob" for enjoying the fruits of his labors. You spend your money on a pipe. Someone else buys an expensive fishing rod, bowling ball, set of golf clubs, or car. More power to ya. I spent 22 years in the Air Force, retired and spent the next 18 as a...

    New Member Intro

Glad you are here John. The members here are a great bunch. I'm particularly excited when we have a new participant eligible for AARP. Farts and all.

Do you smoke a pipe while driving?

I smoke in my vehicles, be it the truck or car. I got into the habit back when cars had lighters and ashtrays instead of usb ports and cup holders. I once had a cup holder that was a little plastic thingy that hung on the window ledge. Any of you remember those little metal caps that were...

    Most Recognized Pipe Smoker?

I agree about the "old groaner." Bing was a great ambassador (sp?) for us all. What I would really like to know is what kind of tobacco these guys smoked. I know President Ford smoked Carter Hall, but I have no idea what Stalin or Einstein did. Nor Bing for that matter.

    I'm An Old Fart

Happy Birthday. Hope you have many more. I am 72 and someone the other day said "the only thing wrong with growing old is remembering when you were young." All the best.

    In My Day ...

Sounds like you guys have read my biography. All I can say is, "the country I live in today is not the country I grew up in." But that is true of the world in general. That is how I knew when it was time to retire. The examples I would give my students began going right over their head and...

    Then and Now

I began this thread with the intention of discussing the differences in pipe smoking and it morphed into all kinds of stuff. It's like "hearding cats." Man alive! I could talk all day about all the other things I miss about the times I grew up in-good and bad. But I probably would sound...

    Seriously!

I feel I need to try for closure here with some dignity so I'm gonna pick up my marbles and go home on this one. It was an interesting discussion and, yes, to a certain extent I enjoy playing the "devil's advocate" (as someone pointed out). After I retired from the USAF, I was an economics...

    Then and Now

Thanks for all the thoughts guys. I think the Brunno article pretty well summed up my feelings on the subject. Sorry you younger troops missed it. And I guess I will have to read the rules more closely. I challenge any of us to be "a-political" by that definition. I guess it really means be...

    "High End"?

So, it is like a Rolls Royce vs Chevy or a Rolex vs Timex. Both do the job, but one has been deemed the best or "high end" by someone. As in "this is my rifle, this is my gun. This is for fighting, this is for fun." OK

    Then and Now

Lawrence, please define "A-political". Maybe this is part of what I'm talking about. One of the things that has changed is the ability to smoke a pipe at your leisure. I get a little miffed when I remember all the old codgers that were able to sit around "the square" in my hometown smoking...

    Vietnam Era Zippo's

That was a whole different era. That is where the term "when I get back to the real world" came from. I flew F4D Phantoms over there and our squadron approved zippo said "Kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out!" Unacceptable sentiment today I know, but you had to be there.

    Then and Now

At the risk of indulging in what some of you will probably deem an old fart's diatribe, I would like to say that Bob Dylan (who?) got it right when he said, "the times they are a changing." When I first began smoking a pipe (1957) the pipe smoker's world was vastly different than the one we...

    "High End"?

Perhaps one or two of you would be so kind as to explain to me what the term "high end" means when used by folks on this forum. I've seen the term being thrown around quite often and have yet to completely understand the meaning. Since I have been told in another post that there is no...

    Seriously!

Whoopee!, Seems like I done poked a stick in a wasp's nest! It was unintentional I assure you. First, I did not and will not refer to anyone as a "snob." My point--if there was one--was/is that I get a bit tired of being "advised" about everything in life. I did not intend anyone to feel...

    Escudo new or the same?

Funny. I haven't even thought about Escudo (I have a couple old tins) in years. How long has this stuff been around? I started smoking it when I bought some in a little tobacco shop in Ampthill, U.K. I was stationed in England from 1964-67, so I know Escudo is older than some of you guys. I...

    Seriously!

As I look at the discussions/articles on our site, I wonder if we are not becoming more and more guilty of arrogance and taking our hobby (never have liked calling my pipe-smoking a hobby)too seriosly. I am now an old man and, of course, adverse to change, but I have been smoking a pipe for...

    Individual Smoking Habits

I am woodcarver and smoke my pipe when I am carving because it relaxes me and allows me to concentrate on my carving. I have smoked a pipe for so long that I no longer consciously (sp?) think about it as I smoke. It is just second-nature. I also smoke when I am reading and I read a lot.
