What is the best Savinelli pipe?

My vote is a 320 KS (King Size) Author shape. To me a quintessential Savinelli shape. All my Sav are this shape alone.

    Thoughts on The Chair?

I really enjoy sitting in chairs talking to other people sitting in chairs. The human race is fascinated with chairs. We call leaders chairs, they chair comittees. We attach motors and horses to chairs calling them chariots, cars and carriages. We even execute prisoners and have them sit in a...

    Plastic Bag Taste

Currently I have let's say many many 1 pound bags of Sutliff blends. One thing I've noticed with their English blends I cannot smell the Latakia through the thicker less flexible factory bag however I can smell it through some of the smaller amounts I've purchased that were repacked by the...

New Very Limited Offering From Can't and Don't

Coming from South Carolina's very own Can't and Don't is a blend that will surely require every single server Cloud Fare can offer. This new blend features exactly 100 year old Red Virginia, some old tobacco an even older guy was selling on the side of a dirt road in Panama, and everyone's...

    Bulk Drying Tin Tobacco

Too much work for me to time drying. I enjoy tinkering sure just not with trying to remember to prep before smoking. If I do I might dry it a bit only because I pre pack a pipe or pack it and get distracted and end up drying it out anyway. When I want to smoke I grab my tobacco of choice and a...

    Naphtha and Mouth Health

No more health risk than usual. We used naphtha to light our charcoal grill back in the 70s. Gave the burgers that classic backyard taste. If you don't mind or like the aftertaste, use it. Zippo brand naphtha to me is the cleanest. Remember there about a dozen different kinds of naphthas...

    Wind affecting pipe smoking question?

Yes wind will affect the smoking of a pipe. Get a wind screen. They snap in on most pipes. Some pipes you'll have to bend the tabs a bit like on my sab author which is a .9 ish wide bowl.

    Dumping Ash

Don't pack so tight and don't tamp hard. Very light tamp almost effortless. If you shake your ash just do it a little bit not the whole thing.

    I wonder why tamping helps.

Ash is an insulator. It keeps the heat evenly spread out and contained maintaining smouldering heat. After a fire has burned for several hours in my wood stove the next morning under the ash I can find coals which have been insulated and starved of air but then readily glow orange after exposure...

Tongue Bite Despite Doing Everything Right

Could be concentrating the smoke exiting the pipe onto the same area of your tongue. Try to let the smoke not hit the same area all the time. Also try to let the smoke fill your mouth without it hitting any area of your tongue directly. Just have the smoke flow over your tongue more like a fog...

    Can I Top That Off?

If it's the same tobacco non-issue as I see it. If it's the same family say one aro and another aro then you'd probably end up mixing flavors a bit but still not too bad. This would happen with dedicated pipes. I would say if you smoked Latakia and left bits of it in the bottom and then tried a...

    Gurgling v Blowing

You can try to run a pipe cleaner down the stem or when this happens to me I just blow a bit forcefully into the pipe and it clears up. Have to catch it real early though don't let it build up. Even after 35 years I still occasionally get a gurgle. It happens.

    Packing Half a Bowl

Pack you would normally and then stop at the half way point. But there is a difference from a full bowl for me. When I pack a full bowl the tobacco goes in a steady stream until full. The first tobacco in is looser and there's a bit of gap left at the bottom of the bowl. This allows better...

    Tobacco Sandwich

Pipe tobacco needs to "marry" and blends take time, temperature and pressure to do that. The flavor and fragrance compounds in the tobacco come from esters formed when the plant grew. Some are good and some not so good. Time temperature and pressure degrade existing esters which alter flavors...

    Post-Bowl Stickiness and Smell

I would suggest, in addition to a full and proper cleanout with grain alcohol as suggested, to smoke some burley to season the pipe before smoking heavy aromatics. I've found personally smoking a burley like old joe blue when a pipe is new helps season the burley a bit. If you are not a fan of...
