What are you Smoking? March 2012

Royal Yacht in the old clay. Funny, like many Dunhill tobaccos, I quite disliked it at first (heresy, I know!), but after giving it "just a few more bowls" as an honest try, I found this quickly grew on me. To that end, I'm almost done with the tin and will be ordering one or two more to have on...

Reccomendations for a foray into Perique

Escudo is certainly the benchmark VaPer, but not light on the Perique--16%, according to a Lane rep. If you'd like a lower-content introduction of Perique, try some of the Hearth & Home blends, like Virginia Spice or AJ's Vaper. Also an excellent and very light blend is Orlik Golden Sliced--and...

    Calling All Coffee Junkies

Have you seen these articles about coffee & cigars? That guy's spot-on!

    Just Got A New Meer

    Lovely pipe,Uber--good score

    Cake Question

I too am of the school of minimal, if any cake--if one develops it's more through my own lassitude than intention. Don't worry, after a while you'll be more concerned with reaming them back than building them up.

    New Laguiole pipe lighter

That's a beautiful lighter, good score. I've always loved laguiole knives; to be noted is that "laguiole" is a generic term, and several companies make laguiole knives & related merchandise--so stick with a high-quality French maker, like Thiers. The fly motif speaks of its heritage as a...

    Escudo!

There really is nothing like Escudo--not even Dun's Navy Rolls. Having smoked tins as old as 60 years, I'll say that the blend cellars perfectly and remains true to form throughout its production history, and what you buy today is as good as what it was "way back then"--so you're better off...

    Desert Island Tobacco and Pipe?

I'd never be happy, or even sated, with only one thing for the rest of forever. As for the pipe, I'd want the most monstrously huge one imaginable so I could use it as a paddle and get back to civilization & more tobacco.

    Civet coffee?

I've had it a number of times, and it's quite good. Relax on your perspective--if you think about it, eating the flesh and innards of animals might seem barbaric to some. Ever been to McDonald's? You don't want to know what goes into a chicken nugget. Close your eyes and open your mind, you...

    Mccranies red ribbon

Patience and money, and you'll find some. I'm certainly not giving up any of my stash :nana: They're all at the top of my straight VA list.

Can you recommend "creamy", non-spicy Virginias?

C&D has some wonderful Virginias in this vein--Opening Night, Manhattan Afternoon and Interlude come to mind, from the Simply Elegant series. Hearth & Home Marble Kake is likewise sweet, pure Virginia bliss. McCranie's Red Ribbon or Flake are brilliant, no matter the vintage.

How far down do you smoke?

To the bottom of the tin / pouch / jar, lately. Been smoking a lot. :puffy:

What are you Smoking? March 2012

Finished off the last of my Borkum Riff Cherry Liqueur in a cob, now finishing off the evening with Nat Sherman Spuyten Duyvil in a Sasieni.

    Would like opinion on Tsuge

I find it interesting that there's a low-end line of machine mades around the $50 mark, and then the Ikebana line at the $500+ mark...not much middle ground there. Thanks for the review Paul, very helpful!

    What is your Iconic Pipe?

I'm in the classic English-proportioned straight billiard camp as well. Though my collection has branched out quite a bit, the straight billiard is my mental icon of all that is pipeness.

    Best and Worst Pipes

I'll take that jet stream off your hands :) shoot me a pm Best--I've only kept the good smokers, but maybe the best of the best are the beckers. And Sasienis. And Chacoms. And Uncle Arthurs. And of course, the Jet Streams. Smoking one now, in fact. :puffy: Worst--got rid of them all, and maybe...

    Jarring Unopened Tins?

Tins are good indefinitely, provided that there is no rust or denting that may have broken the seal. Coin-twist lids (the shoe-polish style tins) are, IMHO, slightly more susceptible to the elements; a properly sealed tin will evidence no shaking of the contents. Rust spots can indicate a...

    Latest PAD attack

I like the look of that Douglas air cooled, lifeon2--seems to be from the same school of design as my beloved Jet Streams. I'd be interested in it, were it to go on the block
