I Want to Know the Unknowable

Thanks for chiming in, Russ! As a follow up, I'm wondering how frequently when blending you introduce your own top notes and processes? Just wondering what level of modification might go in to a blend made from these manufacturers components. Obviously any changes would need to be replicated...

    Restoring Tobacco Moisture

Some folks would tell you to put an apple slice in the tobacco. Tell those people that that's an excellent way to promote mold growth and then do what sablebrush52 said.

I Want to Know the Unknowable

Does anyone know who these tobacco wholesale companies are who supply manufacturers?

I Want to Know the Unknowable

Also curious if a blender like GL Pease's process. Since his stuff is made by C&D, presumably he's restricted to their components when he's coming up with something? I assume he modifies them with some top secret processes that they're able to duplicate in scale, though.

I Want to Know the Unknowable

I didn't really realize manufacturers had contracts with farms directly. I would have just thought farmers sold to wholesalers who then made the tobaccos available to manufacturers. Huh.

    you gotta love it

    How does this happen?

I Want to Know the Unknowable

How many whole leaf wholesalers are there/could there be, I wonder. And, I was under the impression the tobacco auction is largely a thing of the past.

    Negatives or Hazards of Retrohaling?

The nose and mouth are physically connected, so even if you're not consciously exhaling a full draw of smoke through your nose, some of it is going through (ie. you're retrohaling to some extent whether you're meaning to or not.)

    Similar Blend to McClelland #24?

Don't count on that. Some of the worst information about tobacco in the world comes from B&M employees.

I Want to Know the Unknowable

It's a mystery. And mystery drives me nuts.

I Want to Know the Unknowable

I've seen these and am generally familiar with how tobaccos themselves get processed from leaf. I guess I'm more interested in who is starting "from scratch" to put their blends out, as opposed to who those who start from components and then modify, as opposed to those who are just 1 part X to 1...

I Want to Know the Unknowable

I continue to be curious about manufacturing and blending processes, especially after all the discussion about what impact McClelland's departure from the industry will have. So how does it all work behind the curtain? Which "houses" actually process their own blends and to what extent? Does...

    Hot Water Wash?

I find all positives and no negatives to rinsing with water. It's natures solvent, after all. Rinse and ream with a paper towel. It's magical.

    Dunhill Flake Square Tins

Yeah, but... rectangles in round tins. Am I the ONLY one bothered by this? It's absurd!

    Negatives or Hazards of Retrohaling?

I snork the bejesus out of Mixture. I don't get nearly as much sweetness or the "honey" notes without blowing it out my nose. As for those who claim they don't get an increased sense of flavor from a retrohale, I don't understand, unless your sniffer is broke, or you're doing it to some degree...

    Dunhill Royal Yacht 1934

Especially if it has a bar code (introduced in 1974) and was made in Denmark.

    Finally Made A Pipe Rack

Love it when something gets built that looks like it will last forever.

Guess What? You Actually Don't Like the Tobaccos You THINK You Do.

Happy to report that I'm not a cake builder. And with the support of this quote, I can now feel superior saying that about myself! ;)

    Dunhill Flake Square Tins

There were still square tins being shipped as of late last year - even some shipments I heard of that had both square and round, as the stock changed over. When they actually started tinning in round, who knows. By the time you see it, it could have been 6 months or two years depending on where...
