    Stanwell Italian Made Pipes

I use these tools in order from left to right when cutting a new slot. The far left tool isn't needed when cutting the slot on an existing pipe. If the stem is bent it needs to be straightened by slowly and gently heating it up until it softens. I use a heat gun and keep the stem moving so it...

    Stanwell Italian Made Pipes

That's because cobs and some other factory made pipes use premolded stems rather than stems made from rod stock.

    Stanwell Italian Made Pipes

That is interesting. Every one of my Italian made Stanwell's has had the same restricted airway. Makes me wonder if some of the Danish made stem stock might have been purchased and used with the acquisition and move to Italy. Curious for sure. Here are the photos and info as promised: This...

    Stanwell Italian Made Pipes

The last 3/4" or so of the stem airway should be widened horizontally as the airway get's smaller vertically. It sort of looks like a 'V' shape when done right. I have a couple Italian made Stanwell's that should arrive today or tomorrow. I'll post photos of the airway from factory, the tools...

    Stanwell Italian Made Pipes

I've been a Stanwell pipe fan since I started over a decade ago. They are my favorite brand of factory made pipe. I have a pretty decent number of Danish made and just as many Italian made ones. In my opinion, the Italian made pipes aren't quite as good in quality as the Danish made ones both...

The Tobacco Choices of Pipe Makers?

McClelland's Red Virginia's are my favorite. I also smoke Dan's DaVinci and Reiner's Professional a lot. I don't like or smoke cigarettes, cigars, or vaping although I've tried them all and smoked cigarettes from my teens until I was 28 then quit cold turkey after becoming very ill. I'll have...

Sandblast/Rusticated Vs. Smooth: Is A Sandblast/Rusticated Pipe Inferior Briar?

From an aesthetic and rarity/perfection perspective, a rusticated or sandblasted pipe is considered by the pipe collecting community in general to be inferior. From a purely utilitarian perspective, no, a rusticated or sandblasted pipe in and of itself as a characteristic will have negligible...

What are the Benefits to a Lovat Shape

I'm not so much a fan of a true lovat for my own personal preferences but I do like a saddle stemmed billiard. They are easy to clench and comfortable to smoke. Saddle stemmed billiards often get erroneously grouped with the Canadian family lovat.

    Straight Pipe Smokers

I have a mix of both straight and bent pipes. For me, bent pipes are more comfortable to smoke but straight pipes tend to perform better. The normal moisture that collects in the airway while smoking has more surface area to absorb in a straight pipe typically. In a bent pipe, the moisture...

Bent/Curved-Shank Pipes: Drilling Draft/Smoke Holes, Etc.

How Often Do You Clean Your Pipes?

I haven't cleaned any of my pipes in at least a couple years if not more. My pipes are lucky to get a pipe cleaner run through them once or twice a year. I like the taste of a 'dirty' pipe. I prefer to spend my time smoking and making them rather than cleaning them.

    Anyone Else Ride?

I've ridden motorcycles most of my life. I currently own two; a '98 HD Road King Classic and a 1970 HD Ironhead that I'm rebuilding. Here's my Road King: Here's what the Ironhead looked like before it exploded into a million pieces in my garage: And, here it is currently minus the ape...

    Central Indiana Pipe Smokers

The Pipe Puffer in Greenwood and The Briar & Burley in Bloomington are pretty close to the same distance from me so either one works for me.

    Central Indiana Pipe Smokers

I'm still game as well. Pipe Puffer in Greenwood or Briar and Burley in Bloomington are equal distance from me. The Briar and Burley has more seating but either works. The only days that don't work for me are Saturdays and Sundays which I realize is probably the days that work best for...

Brand New Pipe. Cracks/Voids in Chamber Wall. What Would You Do?

From a pipe maker's perspective, I can say that it's unacceptable to sell a pipe with flaws like that in the tobacco chamber. It just is. A pipe like this in my shop ends up being a shop pipe. The good news is, however, with a good bowl coating you will probably not have any issues with the...

How can I be loosing my taste for Latakia? Has anyone else had this experience?

chasingembers' response echoes my experience exactly. I used to smoke lat heavy blends. Moved to Va's and VaPer's and Orientals etc. then didn't like heavy lat blends anymore but I do like lat blends where the latakia is in the background. Those blends can be hard to find. McClelland's...

    Hey All You Pipe Carvers

I was able to get started on peteguy's commission. This is the second attempt. The first encountered a flaw in the tobacco chamber and had to be chucked in the burn pile. Here we have a rough idea and lines drawn for drilling: Stem fit and rough shaping done:
