    Lack of Taste from Pipe?

Sounds possibly like poorly cured, green briar. One of the first pipes I ever bought was a Savinelli Duca Carlo that took forever and a day to season/break in but once it did it has been one of my best pipes as far as flavor. I think you just need to smoke the demons out of the briar if you...

Adding A Little Sweetness To A Blend

Lane BCA is a good one. Inexpensive. Easy to find. Made to smoke alone or to blend. Good quality.

Adding A Little Sweetness To A Blend

My vote is for straight black cavendish. It doesn't take much though so experiment until you find the sweet spot for your tastes.

    Pipe Retort Question

Not necessarily but be careful with old acrylic stems. I've had the buttons melt and tiny fissures spiderweb through some older, more brittle acrylic stems. Newer acrylic stems should be okay. Acrylic can become brittle over decades.

    Father The Flame Movie

Just watched it for the first time in its completed version and I really enjoyed it. Even spotted myself as an extra in the background which was kind of fun. Watching Father the Flame and being more active in the pipe forums has rekindled my passion for making pipes a bit. I'm looking forward...

    Golden Age of Pipe Making

I agree with Sablebrush. It's like comparing apples to oranges. The pipemaking industry has evolved significantly. In some ways, the old days of pipemaking is far superior and in others, the quality and artistry of pipes made today have been pushed by some to far exceed many of the pipes of...

***What Are You Smoking, October 2020?***

McClelland's 40th Anniversary in a Chacom spigot Apple. I usually let a pipe rest at least a day before smoking it again but I'm in the process of moving so all my pipes but this one are packed away in a box somewhere in this mountain of boxes. :D

    Retro-Inhalation.

Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor. I wonder if the capillaries in your sinus tract are constricting and giving you a sinus headache? Probably just temporary until your vessels get acclimated but hard to say. I retrohale more often than I exhale through my mouth and I've never had problems with...

Do You Believe In The Cake? Yes or No

Nope. I can speak to this frankly now since I don't make pipes to sell anymore beyond a hobby and could care less if it offends potential buyers. The number one reason pipe maker's pre-carbon coat is for insurance to prevent the buyer from destroying the pipe by not smoking it correctly and...

    Apples

Honeycrisps are my favorite variety but any apple straight off the tree is my absolute favorite.

    Crossover Smokes When Changing Blends

It really varies based on the pipe, the strength of the ghosted flavor, and how sensitive your palate is.

    New Smoker Issues

I smoke Davidoff medallions somewhat regularly and never let it dry out and it smokes fine. I rub them out thoroughly into a ribbon consistency. By the time I have it all rubbed out, it's plenty dry for me. For me, tobacco that is too dry or smoked too hot will degrade flavor. I agree with...

    How Much To Cellar

Oh, I figure it won't be a rash decision. If my health is a slow and gradual decline, hopefully I'll know when the time comes. My luck, though, I'll probably have a massive stroke that leaves me an invalid and unable to take "the walk." I suppose I romanticize the whole affair in my mind but...

What Turned You on to Pipes?

Smoked cigs from 15 to 28. My friends that I hiked with liked to pack cigars and smoke them around camp. I never really cared for cigars. I remembered a brief period when my father smoked a pipe and remembered the great smell. I'm also a fan of old black and white movies when pipes were...

    How Much To Cellar

I've told my wife and kids that I intend to do as the nomadic native Americans did and go on my 'spirit walk' once/if I become too much of a burden. I intend to pack a little nap sack and wander off into the mountains somewhere and die in peace. I'll skip the whole...

Do You Believe In The Cake? Yes or No

I'm with you, Harris. Except I'm not big on cleaning my pipes. The dirtier the better as far as I'm concerned. The drier you smoke them, the less you have to clean them! On the rare occasion I get a little hasty with my cadence and I get a gurgle, I'll flick it out and I might (might) run a...

    What To Do...

Fix the toilet then take the rest of the day off, drink some beer, and smoke your pipe in celebration of your accomplishment.

    Briar Age

I can see how a sudden drastic change in moisture and temperature could cause an aged briar pipe to crack; especially if there was a particular weakness in the wood. I've seen some briar that appears perfectly normal have soft pulp areas or unseen fissures, pits and similar flaws that may not...
