New guy looking for the right smoke... please help!

I agree with MSO that your best bet is to try a variety of small quantities until you find one you like. I think my favorite tobacco is Scotty's Butternut Burley but you might find it a little too mild for you. You should try a Latakia blend. In that genre, I like G. L. Pease Quiet Nights. There...

    Rehydration techniques

I have rehydrated very dry tobacco using an apple core or a slice of apple. I drop the apple into a ziplock bag, pour the tobacco over it and shake to get the apple roughly in the center. After 2 or 3 days it's about right. Then I remove the apple and discard it. I've never had any mold problem...

    LePeltier Pipes

I had never heard of a Lepeltier pipe so I looked up their web site. They look very interesting. Thanks for pointing me to something new. http://www.lepeltier-pipes.com/index.html

Pear wood - how does it hold up?

I have several Mr. Brog pear wood pipes and think they are OK. I do not smoke them that often so they should last a long time. If you only smoke it occasionally it should be fine. The fact that your wife gifted it to you makes it special. Enjoy it and tell her you love it.

    The famous Black Frigate

I don't know if this forum is a good or a bad influence on me but I just ordered a tin of Black Frigate from 4noggins. Another new tobacco to smoke and enjoy.

    Italian Pipe Show (video tour)

Such beautiful pipes and many around 100 euros. I was surprised unless I was misreading the price tags. The unusual shapes and colors appealed to me less than those with graceful shapes and striking grains. Truly a pipe smokers paradise.

    Horrible Gurgling Pipes

I love this forum. Thanks for starting my day with a smile.

The Missouri Meerschaum Bully 2019, The First of Several In A Limited Release

Just placed my order. I thought about waiting until the rest come out but was afraid they would sell out. Really a nice looking cob.

    Dagner Missouri Meerschaum Cob Poker

I have five cobs and several dozen nice briar pipes and I find myself smoking the cobs as often as the briars. I love the way they smoke. Cobs are very forgiving pipes. They smoke cool and do not seem to require any resting times between smokes. If they have cooled from the last smoke they are...

    Hiking in the Ozarks

We did pretty well, but then as Boy Scouts, we were prepared. :)

Metal And Briar In Unison, My H. Wiebe Radiator Has Arrived!

Craft stores have those long pipe cleaners in a choice of nifty colors.

    Hiking in the Ozarks

Years ago when I had a Boy Scout troop, we did a five day hike down the Buffalo River. It has been designated a "National River" rather than a park and a wide swath of land on each side has been allowed to slowly return to wilderness. It is a very beautiful place. I hope Elbert took some nice...

    Dating a Prince Albert Tin

Thank you, 3rdguy. As you suggested the UPC code was added in 1975 and Middleton became the maker in 1987. All I can say for sure is that this was manufactured sometime between those two dates. Still, if this is from 1987, that is still 32 years ago. I'd say that is well aged. Great brochure...

    Dating a Prince Albert Tin

UPC codes became ubiquitous from 1975 and later but I have no idea when they appeared on PA tins. Maybe as early as 1975. I'm hoping some codger with a good memory can recall when this price was prevalent. I'm just curious. It still smokes good. :)

    Dating a Prince Albert Tin

Recently I acquired 5 unopened vintage 1&1/2 ounce tins of Prince Albert still filled with tobacco. I am interested in dating them. They are in good shape with a little tarnish on the top but very clean. The tobacco inside is quite dry but still smokes OK. Well-aged, you might say. The price...

    MM Cobs As Permanent Pipes

I consider my cobs to be more or less permanent pipes. I know for sure that they are tough. I have this black lab pup who loves to chew on things. She found one of my oldest and dearest cobs and decided to "rusticate" it for me. It still smoked fine although I have since replaced the stem.

    What's Your Favorite Cherry Tobacco?

I bought two tins of Cult Blood Red Moon about 8 years ago, opened one and tried to like it several times but found it artificial and cloying so capped it up and put it away in the far corner of my "cellar". After reading this thread I decided to pull it out and try it again. It still had a good...

    Pipes with Caps

I wanted a pipe with a wind cap to smoke outside when it is breezy but didn't want to invest much. So I bought a Mr. Brog pear wood pipe (gasp!) for $25 and it works just fine. Smokes good and I am not concerned that it is not prestigious. :)

New (To Me) Antique Meerschaum: Any Idea Who It Might Depict?

I have several meerschaums, two cheapos and one rather nice one. The figure would be Bacchus I believe. I talked my first wife into buying this for me for my birthday one time. Probably the reason we aren't together anymore. I still have the pipe.
