    UK Market Germain's Availability?

Well I was wrong. I just spoke with an insider, and it has nothing to do with price. Its just a function of Germains being a small company that has no interest in scaling up to meet demand.

    UK Market Germain's Availability?

They may smoke more pipe tobacco in Asia, but any Germains product that comes to the US is immediately sold out. So its probably a pricing issue rather than a demand issue.

    UK Market Germain's Availability?

It's interesting that a big batch goes to Singapore, while there is none to be found in the US. Could this possibly be related to different wholesale and retail prices in the US and in Singapore? In other words, if there is more money to be made in Singapore...

    Stockpiling

Stockpiling gives us the mental comfort of thinking that at least this one thing is under our control in our lives. But underneath this lies that fact that most of the stockpilers will not enjoy a smoking career long enough to avoid having much of that tobacco eventually go to the estate market.

    Packing a Pipe...

Some say looser, some say tighter. Why? One reason is that there will be tradeoffs, no matter how you pack. Another reason is that all the different pipes and tobaccos have different 'burn characteristics'. Another is that the different cuts of tobacco conform to being packed into a bowl in...

    UK Market Germain's Availability?

It has been many months since any of the larger U.S. internet sellers had any Germains for sale online.

    Cigar Shops and Pipe Smokers

In Tucson AZ, the local cigar lounge owners have been welcoming to have me as a visiting pipe smoker. As a general rule I put a ten dollar bill in their tip jar, because I don't want to spoil things for myself or other pipe smokers.

What Makes a Great Work of Art?

No offense intended: Roger Ballen, Asylum of the Birds. I've spent a lot of time looking at this image. For me it's pretty great. I could get into some of the reasons why I think that, but I don't think I would convince anyone who doesn't 'get it' unprompted.

What Makes a Great Work of Art?

Great art mirrors some profound aspect of life, or truth. Profound truth is impossible to define, and so is great art. Fortunately, you know it when you see it.

In Remembrance of Peter Gabriel's Music

I'll bet he had some beautiful pipes. No doubt we will see them soon on the estate market..

    Smoking Outside the Box

The title is not mine; its taken from an interesting article from a somewhat unlikely source: http://www.deathmetal.org/lifestyle/smoking-outside-the-box/ Many opinions are expressed here, and at least some of them feel spot-on for me, but your mileage may vary. As for the more factual...

Anyone Have Extensive Experience with Dermatologists?

Their practice styles vary widely. Some will biopsy every spot, others are more conservative. Some make extensive use of physician's assistants- I would be wary of those. It can be difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff.

    Artisan Recommendations

What price range? Or, price no object?

    Artisan Spigots?

Former makes absolutely incredible silver spigot pipes. On the more affordable side, Abe Herbaugh makes them occasionally and they look super nice in the images I have seen.

    Pipe Grading

BTW, Jess Chonowitsch does grade his pipes.

    Bill Callahan/Smog

That's the guy. Lloyd Cole and the Commotions. Nice tune.

    Bill Callahan/Smog

BTW, there are popular and respected musicians out there who are also pipe smokers. For example: http://www.lloydcole.com/his-other-life/ He initiated a popular Esoterica-related thread here a year or two ago, but nobody recognized him (except me).

    Pipe Grading

I guess all pipes are equally worthy of our love and attention. Kind of reminds me of the leftist doctrine on our college campuses.

    Pipe Grading

Every good pipemaker, including the very best, will make mostly good pipes and some great pipes. Accordingly, every pipemaker grades his/her pipes. How, you might ask? By setting a price. When a pipemaker goes the extra step of making his grading explicit with a grade stamp, he is actually...

    Pipe Grading

Interesting responses. Even though some of the most highly regarded makers practice grading, most of the posters here seem to reject the idea. Just goes to show how diverse our hobby is.
