    Morning Coffee Companion

Those are gonna be some big ass moths, judging from the cat-erpillars... I'll see myself out.

    Morning Coffee Companion

Handsome! I've only identified ten or twelve butterflies and moth species on our property in WI. Are you aware of iNaturalist?

    Pipe Clubs? (UP of Michigan)

Depending on where in the UP you are, I know there's a Northeastern Wisconsin one that meets quarterly-ish in Green Bay. Otherwise I'll direct you to the UPCA, who keep a list of their member clubs. Which of course are not all the clubs in the states, just those who care to become UPCA members.

    2025 Chicago Pipe Show!

The 2025 Chicago Pipe Show already happened. Are you trying to break news about future shows, or lament that you couldn't make it?

    Hulk Hogan Dead At 71

I know I'm going to regret this, but what's a "shoot" video?

    Found the Culprit

Well then, I guess she was just raised to be thoughtful.

    Found the Culprit

Maybe she prefers the room note of pipe tobacco to RYO cigarettes and is hinting that you should switch back.

The Absurd Economics of Home CNC

I put great value on the experience, finesse, and ability to put one design into the larger context of "smoking pipes" that an artisan uses. None of which can be accomplished with a CNC no matter how expertly piloted. But blood, sweat, and tears? At least a robot can be counted on to make a...

The Absurd Economics of Home CNC

My central observation is that it's remarkable to me that the cost of the means to produce a theoretically infinite number of (probably not very good) pipes at home has equalled the cost to purchase one pipe from a reputable artisan. There are still real, econometric reasons to chose the...

The Absurd Economics of Home CNC

I cannot believe how low the cost of entry level desktop CNC machines has become. Let's say -hypothetically- that I've had an idea brewing in my head for a complex pipe shape. It's beyond my artistic abilities to draw by hand, so I put time into a 3D model. Now, here's where I have an...

Where Is Your Favorite Place To Smoke A Pipe

At the Kearvaig Bothy. Even tho I've only gotten to do it once.

Assuming the same material, does pipe shape matter?

Given that briar is an organic material that grows in the wild with no consideration for pipe makers or smokers, I'm not sure you CAN assume the same material pipe to pipe

Tobacco Heritage Festival - Southern Wisconsin

I can try and find the reference later, but there was a time that Rock County, WI was amongst the top tobacco producing areas in the US. The cultivar Wisconsin 609 is a burley (air cured) type favored by the chew and machine-rolled cigar industries. But to achieve a cure during our cold falls...

Tobacco Heritage Festival - Southern Wisconsin

I have been to this event. The old downtown of Edgerton is bordered by big, steam-heated warehouses that used to cure and store the tobacco harvest. Many of the buildings have murals or old advertising for Mail Pouch Tobacco, a chewing tobacco made there. There is still commercial tobacco...

    Brandy Acquisition Disorder (BAD?)

You may like this stuff. My sister used to work at their tap room, and we had some a couple weeks ago while I was visiting her. If it looks interesting to you, it is available direct from them to most US addresses.

    Water Content Analyzer

One of the authors is an occasional poster here. @craiginthecorn he may be able to dig it up if you aren't a subscriber to the digital edition of The Pipe Smoker's Ephemeris.

    Water Content Analyzer

If you search the forums for "moisture meter" you will see that this comes up every couple years. An 'experiment' was written up by Mike Z. and Craig H. In the NASPC magazine probably 7-8 years ago now which suggested they're a useful tool for relative measures, but not accurate for actual water...

Does Anyone Know Much About the United States Tobacco Co.?

Fascinating! Thanks so much, everyone. I had read about the break-up of American Tobacco in Barbara Hahn's book, but never thought I would have a small family connection to that story. I knew my Great Grandfather for a little while. He passed when I was 7 or 8. It wasn't until later in life...
