***What Are You Smoking, October 2025?***

Edisto in the Virginia cob. Just for variety, I moistened the pack with a drop of water before lighting up. Predictably, that made it harder to light, but I got a lot more of the sweet fruitiness from the best smokes of this blend. Next time, I’ll try smarter hydration methods to see if that...

***What Are You Smoking, October 2025?***

Edisto in my Savinelli 313 prince. Breezy on the porch this morning, but still some good flavors. Almost done with this tin.

My Epiphany About the Importance of Packing

For what it's worth, here's a video of Achim Frank himself demonstrating the method: I've tried it (one should try different methods to see what works for them), but the only part I do regularly anymore is to press the mound of tobacco from side to side with my thumbs. If it sinks into the...

My Epiphany About the Importance of Packing

This is why I like to use a fingertip to tamp whenever possible. I think "touch" rather than "push" and that prevents me from compressing any more than necessary to keep the ember in contact with fresh tobacco.

    Missing mawnansmiff

Yep. Sometimes a poster isn't overtly or intentionally offensive, but they are still "high maintenance", and the mods only have so much bandwidth.

    English tobacco.

Not sure if it'll help, but I've always heard and used "English blend" to refer to Virginia/Oriental/Latakia blends, and "English tobacco" to refer to tobacco products from Old Blighty more generally. Rachel bristles at the term "Lakeland" for the perfumy sauced stuff, but these terms have a...

Enjoyment of simplicity or one Dimensional?

I have about two pounds of open blends at the moment, but fretting about that wouldn't bring simplicity or enjoyment, so I have resolved not to. I just try to find enjoyment in whatever I'm smoking, and if I can't, I don't restock that blend.

    How dry should it be?

When you're still learning the ropes, it's not a bad idea to dry it to crispy. Then, it'll stay lit better and you can work on relaxing and doing the minimum to keep it going. (As a newbie, I was constantly frying my tongue with relights and puffing to keep it going. Learn from me.) From...

Two bowls of Edisto in my Savinelli 313 today. It was a little breezy, but beautiful outside.

    Low Nicotine pipe tobacco

One thing that helps for me is to make sure I'm not smoking on an empty stomach. Try eating something if you find yourself getting woozy... Alternately, feel free to pause a bowl when you've had enough, and pick it up again later. Many blends will taste just fine later as long as you didn't...
