Give it some time to breathe if you haven't already, it opens up, but it's nothing spectacular taste wise, it's just great no fuss and consistent tobacco. I agree with you about the aftertaste, this blend gives me cravings if I stop smoking it for a couple of days.- NomadOrb

Is there a general consensus on what blend a new piper should start on?
Carter Hall pretty much smokes itself, it's a great blend to practice packing, lighting, and, cadence.
