You Never Forget Your First: Reflections on Three Years of Pipe Smoking

My first was a Lorenzo Cadore bent billiard with a rum and butter house blend. Both of which I bought at a Sheffield & Sons in a local mall. I still smoke this combination on my pipe smoking anniversary and enjoy it. I also tried CB White in the early days but was lurking on this forum so...

***What Are You Smoking, April 2023?***

It’s a little overcast and chilly, so back in the smoke shack for comfort. Going to need to turn the portable heater down, must be Spring, really don’t need it anymore. Enjoying some 2012 Dunhill MM 965 in a Comoy’s Tradition Pot with a coffee.

    Prince Albert in a Can

I went to dig up this old tin and to my surprise it was a Velvet tin! I’ve never smoked Velvet nor does it sound like something I’d enjoy that much, too mild. It’ll still make a good tin to carry some tobacco out and about.

***What Are You Smoking, April 2023?***

Enjoying some 2015 C&D Luigi Radice in a Julius Vesz bent Apple. The tobacco was a generous gift from my 2021 Secret Santa.

    Prince Albert in a Can

I have an empty one, I will have to fashion a liner like you have and start to use it.

***What Are You Smoking, April 2023?***

A beautiful Spring day, maybe all the snow in the backyard will melt by tomorrow. Front yard will be a few more days. Enjoying the sun on the deck and some 2018 C&D Pirate Kake in a C&D MM cob. I guess this is a Latakia pipe now.

C&D Fraternal Twin Blends -- Bayou Night and Mountain Camp

Thanks for the suggestion, I will need to get some Mountain Camp and compare the the two.

Dunhill Durbar in a Philip Trypis Square Panel while enjoying a coffee and the sunshine on the back deck.

    Mindless/Mindful Smoking, Right Ways/Wrong Ways

Agreed, in the beginning I had to focus when everything was new. For me the doing other things at the same time helped me to move on to doing less or “nothing” while smoking which helped things become more natural. Glad Cosmic’s suggestions make sense and that you are feeling better to enjoy...

***What Are You Smoking, April 2023?***

Remembering my Dad on the anniversary of his passing, smoking 2018 Cabbie’s Mixture in a 1962 (birth year) Dunhill Root Bruyere bent billiard drinking Johnny Walker Black Label.

    Mindless/Mindful Smoking, Right Ways/Wrong Ways

Smoking a pipe while doing other things has helped to make it more of a natural reflex over time. Just sitting and focusing completely on the pipe wasn’t getting me there. Not that I don’t pay attention to what I am doing or enjoy the flavours but sometimes it is good to just go on automatic...

    Ehrlich's Meerschaum Lathe tooling.

So cool, except now you will get all the requests to do tap and thread repairs on vintage meerschaum pipes. It’s like that one friend with a pick-up. Ironically, I have a 1911 meerschaum that needs this kind of repair. Don’t worry, I’m not hinting, I’ll get around to it.

    No Smoking For Awhile.

    Wishing you all the best!

***What Are You Smoking, April 2023?***

Enjoying some 2018 Peterson Irish Whiskey in a Natural Nording Signature. My wife bought me the tobacco and pipe when she was on a business trip to the States. The pipe doesn’t have a distinguished pedigree but it is a favourite for sentimental and practical reasons. Anything I put in here...

    Dunhill Durbar Information

I recently opened a 2012 tin of Durbar and also really enjoyed the blend. Immediately was one of my favourites. I appreciate all the suggestions for a replacement.

    Another Level Of Snobbery.

I enjoy all forms of decaf coffee, avoiding the caffeine for health reasons, but love the taste of coffee. Not all coffee is equal but that’s okay. I do add a little milk but black is okay too. Less snobby, almost promiscuous.

    You ole Codger...

I also see codger blends as OTC blends that have been around for a long time. I don’t see the term codger as overly negative, rather more the recognition of experience and practice that is based on that experience. There are all kinds of personalities behind the first layer of crustiness that...

    Smoking jackets?

I don’t have a smoking jacket yet but do plan to get one some time this year. Perhaps in a pattern that won’t show burns readily. Although maybe a smoking jacket should show some wear from smoking. Thoughts?

***What Are You Smoking, March 2023?***

No sunshine today, so back in the smoke shack with some 2012 MM965 in a Phillip Trypis rusticated bent billiard. A great pairing!
