    Boswell Tins...need jarring?

GLP and SPC are sealed, I guess?...but I didn't trust them because aren't the sides cardboard? Maybe I am wrong. I know when I open them, I'm breaking a metal seal on top, but I didn't think they had an airtight seal. Would be great to be wrong.

    Boswell Tins...need jarring?

I immediately jar all the tobacco I buy from Seattle Pipe Club and GLPease because their tins aren't really sealed. I leave the Samuel Gawith, Hearth & Home and MacBaren because those tins are vacuum sealed. At least, that is my understanding. I just got some Boswell tobacco for the first...

    Largest Stores Still in Business

I just stopped into The Briar and Burley in Bloomington, Indiana. Wow. Great inventory on hand. I hope to go back.

    Using Filters - or Not?

Having posted that, I am still evolving. Perhaps next year I will be back, decrying the evils of filters.

    Using Filters - or Not?

I'm still somewhat of a newbie, but here is my take: -- My favorite pipe is a Vauen, and I use 9mm filters in it every time I use it (Dr. Perl Junior). I don't like to smoke it without the filter. -- I like the paper filter in my Missouri Meerschaum, but often smoke without them. -- I have a...

Sandblast/Rusticated Vs. Smooth: Is A Sandblast/Rusticated Pipe Inferior Briar?

I see two possible effects of a heat sink bowl: 1) the effect you described: more surface area means more ability for the pipe to port heat out of bowl; and 2) as you hold the pipe, less surface area directly in contact with your hand means that less of that heat will be transferred to your...

    SPC Plum Pudding

Mississippi River is my favorite, but I do like Plum Pudding as well. No odd taste or film at all.

    Dunhill Caput?

Started pipe smoking recently...heard about this Dunhill thing...bought and loved Dunhill Nightcap...started to freak out about not being able to get "my favorite." But then I had Quiet Nights...then I had Mississippi River & Plum Pudding...etc. Not as concerned about Dunhill anymore.

When You Tell Your Doctor You Smoke a Pipe...

Just started pipe smoking. I've always said I don't smoke. When I tell my doctor, will it be reported to the government/my insurance provider? Will my insurance costs go up? I'm in the United States.

Recommendations for pipe stores/tobacconists in Germany?

Looks like I will be a 4+ hour drive away from the Vauen factory. Too bad.

Recommendations for pipe stores/tobacconists in Germany?

I will soon have a chance to be in the area of Hanover, Wolfsburg, and Berlin. Any recommendations for a pipe club, or pipe store or pipe tobacconist in those cities?

Do we have too many pipes?

So, I started smoking a few months ago, and I only have two pipes so far: a Vauen briar and a MM cob. I don't consider myself poor by any means, but I have other things vying for my cash at the moment (like college tuitions for the kids). So, I try to be frugal. Plus, I only smoke one bowl on...

You, Your Pipe and Your SO

Ditto here. She likes the sit down and talk time. Tonight, though, she jumped up and went inside. It was already borderline too hot, and then the wind shifted, and a big creamy cloud of White Night smoke settled around her head. Might have been better if it was an aromatic, but the breeze...

Blends I've Come to Really Like

Interesting list. I'm new this year as well. I don't have the resources to try as many as you, but here are my results: I started the hobby with a basic black cavendish from my local brick & morter pipe store. I'm guessing it was Lane BCA. It was great...it was all I knew for a while, and I...

    End Of The Day

End of day is good. I like just before sunset. Scotch: I used to do scotch and cigars years ago. However, since picking up tobacco again in the form of pipe smoking, I have not enjoyed scotch with my better tobaccos...the strong scotch flavor blows away the more subtle flavors of the tobacco...

    Your Top 5 Tobaccos

So far (but I only started smoking a pipe recently): Seattle Pipe Club - Mississippi River G.L. Pease - Quiet Nights Seattle Pipe Club - Plum Pudding Hearth & Home - White Knight Dunhill - Night Cap

Travelling by Air with Tobacco in the US

Hmmm. The flavor of the Plum Pudding is sticking with me. I may move it up the rankings yet. We'll see how a few more bowls go.

Travelling by Air with Tobacco in the US

Thanks for all the comments and advice. I've never smoked anything illegal, or even held it, and so I honestly wasn't sure how different the illegal stuff looked from ordinary tobacco. I took my pipe, planning on hitting a new tobacco store when I arrived at my destination, but I never had the...

Travelling by Air with Tobacco in the US

I'm wondering if TSA will give me any trouble if I take a mason jar of tobacco in a carry on. (I don't usually check bags.) Will they know what it is? Will they think it is something worse than mere pipe tobacco? Are these silly questions?
