***What Are You Smoking, May 2020?***

Peterson Deluxe Navy Rolls in a sandblasted Briarworks bullmoose. First bowl in nearly 4 days, and it sat mighty well with me. puffy

    Finally a Nic Hit

Whooosh - some of you chaps are approaching hardcore. I have never smoked any 'baccy that would make my head spin, and don't pursue that effect at all.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2020?***

Lately, a lot of Bald Headed Teacher and Escudo Navy Deluxe. Newminster No. 400 is my standby. I know Wilke was known for its Bohemian blend, which has apparently gone the way of the dodo...shame because it sounds like an interesting aromatic blend (most of which I don't much care for).

***What Are You Smoking, May 2020?***

Jim, I see you're smoking a fair amount of Wilke blends recently...any you'd particularly recommend?

***What Are You Smoking, May 2020?***

My usual Newminster No. 400 flake in a bent Falcon stem with briar bowl. I've had this stem for probably 20 years now, but had to buy a new bowl for it when I resumed pipe smoking, because I had somehow lost the first I bought with the stem. Falcons are fun pipes.

Sutliff Molto Dolce in a MM Pride cob. I’m not sure I’m sold on this blend.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2020?***

You must be feeling a trifle wired up by now!

***What Are You Smoking, May 2020?***

Just about to give Ken Byron's "Dark Fired Cherry" a whirl in a Savinelli 673 KS.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2020?***

Having lived with my childrens' damned parakeets for 18 years, I'm with you on that. Wish I'd set them free years ago.

***What Are You Smoking, May 2020?***

4Noggins' "Bald Headed Teacher" in a plastered MM Diplomat, one of the few plastered cobs I have. I'm finding I really like this 4Noggins blend - one of those that smells better in the burn than in the bag. I've gone through most of the 2 ounces I bought already.

SPC Plum Pudding SR vs. SPC Plum Pudding

I have a couple of ounces of 4Noggins' "Bald Headed Teacher" I'm working my way through at the moment, too...a blend I'm rather enjoying!

SPC Plum Pudding SR vs. SPC Plum Pudding

Speaking of a respected opinion - I've never tried any of Peretti's blends, and just ordered a few ounces of their Cuban Mixture and flake, based on your recommendation.

SPC Plum Pudding SR vs. SPC Plum Pudding

Ultimately, even with people whose opinions you respect, often it’s a “buy it and try it” situation with tobacco blends. A guy I’ve known for years, and whose judgement on tobaccos I value, can’t stand Walter Raleigh aromatic, which I’ve found I enjoy more often than not. Try one blend at a...

SPC Plum Pudding SR vs. SPC Plum Pudding

And not a bit of actual pudding, either! My ombudsman will hear of this, let me tell you...

Attn: Peterson Pipe Enthusiasts! You're Going to Enjoy This

I’m simply of the opinion that good basic proficiency ought to be the starting point for any quality manufacturer. The higher grades of briar, sterling silver accents, higher grades of finish, etc., ought to command a higher price - but basic functionality and engineering ought to be the...

    Pipe Smoking In Books

And not a single calabash in sight! A guy once argued with me that Holmes' signature was the "hat and the gourd pipe", and wouldn't hear a word from me that Holmes' calabash pipe and the deerstalker cap were media creations. I realized the longer we went on that he'd never read a word of the...

    A Gentleman And Scholar!

That's the thing about pipe smokers in general - so many hobbyists are edgy and competitive about their hobbies, whatever those may be. My mom was into dog showing and breeding, and I've rarely met a more vain, grasping, snarky set of divas in my life, than when I went with her to dog shows as...

    Pipe Smoking In Books

I didn't know about that (but I'm not surprised). I have 2 copies, one with the Ernest Shepard illustrations, and one with Arthur Rackham's. Both of them were reprinted sometime in the early '50s. I love the Shepard illustration of Mr. Toad swaggering into the Red Lion Inn, cigar clutched in...

    Pipe Smoking In Books

Speaking of C.S. Lewis, there's an anecdote he relates (in his autobiography, maybe?) about a time his father was in a railway car with an elderly man who is clearly in a state of agitated discomfort. The old man finally jumps up from his seat, drops his pants and takes a dump in the corner of...
