The Holy Grail: My Cheap Dunhill

A pre-war Dunhill for the price of a drugstore brand pipe! Great score, rigmedic; it looks like it was well cared for. Happy smoking!

What Are You Smoking? April 2013

My fourth time smoking Penzance, this time in a 1953 Dunhill Root Briar Lovat. This pipe was born and raised on English mixtures and it's giving me the greatest smoke I've had, so far, of Penazance. I was thinking of dedicating this pipe to Virginias, but not after tonight.

    Eating My Own Words . . . H&H

Glad to hear you gave Half and Half another chance and it turned out well. A tobacconist asked me to smoke the whole ounce of each blend I ordered completely, before trying the next one. He feels this is the best way to sample a new blend. I didn't follow his request to the letter, but I came...

    Carter Hall

AS usual, rothnh said it well. You don't get the same ride in a Ford pickup as in a Mercedes, but neither can replace the other.

    Carter Hall

I quickly moved away from drug store tobacco years ago, but because of what I kept hearing about them in cobs, I bought some Carter Hall and Prince Albert and liked CH more than SWR. As others have said, it burns well and has a nice simple nutty flavor. I haven't smoked enough SWR to see if my...

The Stem On My Nording Freehand

As I remember it now, I used 3M sandpaper, not the micromesh brand and it was 1500 grit. Either works, but I wouldn't use a coarser grade than that. It may not be necessary to do anything else to the tenon if you lubricate it with graphite. In my case, lubricant didn't help. If you do have to...

Well, I Just Discovered One Thing...

I enjoy smoking a MM cob with some Carter Hall while doing yard work or gardening. I don't worry about something happening to the cob and Carter Hall is an easy burning blend, so you just light it up and go about your business. In addition cobs are light, so it's easy to clench them while...

The Stem On My Nording Freehand

That technique works every time for me. I put mine in the freezer because it cools down quicker. I got a pipe off Ebay that was so tight I was afraid it wouldn't ever come off, so I put it in the freezer and kept trying to remove the stem every half hour or so. After it finally came off, I...

    Reshaping Stems

I guess you tried it without waiting for some replies, so I hope it came out allright for you, other than the oxidation it caused. Did you put a pipe cleaner through the stem to prevent closing up the airway?

    Going Crazy for Italian Pipes

Nice pipe, pauljmjr. I've heard a lot of praise for Cavicchi's pipes. I have some Savinellis, a couple Ascortis and a Mastro de Paja. They are all nice smoking pipes, with one of the Ascortis standing out as one of my best smoking pipes.

    Dottle, The Unburned Tobacco

Ribbon cut English blends leave the least dottle for me.
