An elaboration on smoking slower. The goal should be to use as little flame/heat as possible to get the pipe going (don't use huge draws at the light or you char a lot of tobacco further down the bowl), and as little air as possible to keep the pipe going (low temps = better smoke).
I think you're right, you may run into rust problems first. Maybe try cleaning and scrubbing them in everclear.

I do the same thing! I have a MM Morgan dedicated to St Bruno RR. I can't decide on a favorite between St. Bruno RR in the cob or DDNR in the Bing's favorite.

I'm no expert, but I've heard about kitty litter being used in humidity control. I wonder if some dry (non-scented) kitty litter in the enclosed space would help.
965 was never my cup of tea, but there are many who have it in their top 10. There is no shortage of quality english blends to choose from. For everyday/all day blends, PS17 English Luxury and Kramer's Father Dempsy also come to mind.
