One More Question on Aging Tobacco!

I have heard some people say the Gawith ones are prone to having their seals pop/fail easier than most. I don't know how true that is but when I come across a Gawith that is drier than usual then I have to wonder if it is the tin itself. Again, I don't have any solid answers, but I am a bit more...

I Tried My First Virginia Today

I also did not notice that you were using a brand new pipe. That probably goes a long way towards explaining why it tastes so bad. The pipe needs to be broken in. My comments remain though about HH Mature Virginia being an atypical Virginia blend so as hfearly says BBF or even Orlik Golden...

One More Question on Aging Tobacco!

Personally I am also a fan of leaving them in the original tins unless there is evidence to suggest that it has been compromised somehow. The round Nightcap tins should be fine unless they were knocked around pretty bad, but I have heard a few complaints about the Gawith tins over time. I defer...

I Tried My First Virginia Today

From the descriptions I've seen, HH Mature Virginias is also a little bit of a different animal than your average Virginia. It is probably not the best choice as an introduction. "22 different tobaccos are included in this blend and of these 15 are Virginia tobaccos. Before blending the tobacco...

    My Cold Steel Blackthorn....

Well, on the plus side you can use it in many situations where you'd be afraid to damage a true blackthorn. I hope you get used to it before long. Keep us posted. Being a Cold Steel product, they do have a heft and martial emphasis that the other walking sticks wouldn't have for the most part...

    My Cold Steel Blackthorn....

Irish can you return it at all? Those burls are not "one" with the stick itself - they are glued on, so I don't think you will have much success modifying them on a structural or cosmetic basis.

    Cold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Feels like 7 degrees Fahrenheit for me. Still not too bad, but not exactly comfortable either.

One More Question on Aging Tobacco!

No problem. As well, if you find the Samuel Gawith blends irritatingly wet for immediate smoking, I find that they blends are not harmed by being left in the opened tin for 2-3 weeks as you finish up the blend. (I still usually place said tin in a Ziploc freezer bag, though) Just monitor the...

    Hockey Anyone?

The NHL's incursion into the desert and the Deep South is one of the worst decisions they ever made. There are natural hockey markets and there are places where ice is a foreign concept. The Coyotes and several other teams on life support show that it was an overly ambitious experiment. That...

One More Question on Aging Tobacco!

No, I personally would not dry it out in advance. I am skeptical that there would be any mold growth in a clean jar. It is better to have moist tobacco for aging than dry tobacco, as far as I am concerned. With moisture, you retain all of the oils and flavour compounds that could be compromised...

    I'm In A Jam...

numbersix, There are definite advantages to a degree. Your brother would undoubtedly benefit from having one, but presumably he was not at that time a temperamental fit for college if he dropped out. Maybe it was just the allure of a higher income at an early age - who knows. If he has ANY...

    I'm In A Jam...

robusthermit, you make great points and are a gentleman in the know. I disagree with you on one point, though - the notion that one has to practise the same trade for his entire life. There is nothing stopping an individual from retraining themselves after a decade of work in one field; in many...

    My Second Ruthenberg

That is a keeper for sure! Nothing wrong with another outstanding Cumberland stemmed specimen added to the rotation. ;)

    Three Nuns

If I am not mistaken the current incarnation of Three Nuns contains Kentucky instead. It is also safe to say that the Virginias used are probably vastly different than the vintage stock. From the reviews I've read and the testimonies given here, I think it is safe to say that there are better...

My First Belge- A Rad Davis

Very nice texture indeed! Great pick, I hope it smokes well for you Harris. I am not as familiar with the categorization of shapes as the rest of you guys, but whatever it is - I like it!

    I'm In A Jam...

numbersix, It all depends on if one is studying to be a medical doctor, engineer, biologist, philosopher, or basket weaver... It is easy for the brand new student to get caught up in the university mindset where "the sky is the limit" and "knowledge for its own sake" is encouraged above any...

    I'm In A Jam...

Ride out this term, do your best, and don't burn any bridges as far as your academic record goes... But, if you are already having doubts about the university direction, and you cannot see yourself doing this for another 4-6 years time, then you should probably get all the information you can on...

    I'm In A Jam...

I don't have a trade, yet, but I can say one thing from experience... "General studies" is a general waste of time unless you are independently wealthy. If you have to rack up student debt or spend your parent's money or even your own hard earned savings, then you are better off entering a trade...

    One of My New Canes!!!

From what I have seen and read you will not break the Cold Steel Blackthorn with normal usage as a cane/walking stick... All the same, I would avoid very cold temperatures with it because that has a propensity to weaken the polypropylene. Again under normal usage it should be fine - just don't...

    Goodbye Summertime 2012 :(

Tastes are very individual. I know I told you aromatics are fairly fleeting, but who is to say you won't like what Summertime 2012 tastes like in 1 year, or 2? (Longer than that is a bit of a stretch, but who knows?) All I can guarantee you is that it won't be the same. That is not to say that...
