Well my blackthorn from cold steel arrived today. I've learned a lesson today. Get the real thing. This thing is insanely heavy! An the burl is too big and smooth for me to hold on to! But still thank you everyone for helping me get it!!!!
Looks good brother perhaps a bit of dremel work on the burl can bring it some roughness and a little more hand comfort? It'll certainly crack a skull or two for you though
Irish can you return it at all?
Those burls are not "one" with the stick itself - they are glued on, so I don't think you will have much success modifying them on a structural or cosmetic basis.
Well, on the plus side you can use it in many situations where you'd be afraid to damage a true blackthorn.
I hope you get used to it before long. Keep us posted.
Being a Cold Steel product, they do have a heft and martial emphasis that the other walking sticks wouldn't have for the most part. (Although you can get monstrous real blackthorns as well... Expensive though!)
It looks nice, but huge. I use a brazos hickory safari if I need to walk any distance. Maybe they will have a stick you like. It's hard to find the perfect companion.
Congrats on the blackthorn, however it's a shame that you can't use it daily.. After watching the cold steel video review of it, it looks like you can use it to break bricks and frozen jugs of ice in an emergency...
Just do not smack anything with the brown part of the burl, because it will crack and look bad.
Only strike with the black underside - then you can wail away at your hearts content...
There was a lad on Youtube who cosmetically destroyed that part by bashing in an old TV - the glass was one inch thick and whilst it was smashed easily enough, it did a number on the glued on burl.
