As far as I know, the only one that is "open" to public is at Tobacco Road. The Briar Patch on Fair Oaks Blvd is a members only although the are stools in the store where you can smoke. :|

Hiked 25 Miles of the Appalachian Trail! (Pics)

Nice trip sounds like a slog the last day. Great pictures! Did you use shelters on tent, what state are you in and why are there trees only on the ridge tops?

    GLP's Union Square

Union Square is a straight Virginia and Navigator is not. US is a good introduction to Va. IMO. It has a pleasant room note and was ready to smoke out of the tin. It is mild so no N kick. YMMV. I liked it. :puffpipe:

    Different Packing for Different Tobaccos

I have found that the packing method is different for a straight sided chamber versus a tapered to the bottom chamber. It takes some experimentation. Part of the fun I guess.

    Stem Removal

I wait until the pipe has dried to remove the stem. I think that the moisture after smoking causes the wood to swell. Removing the stem immediately after use would cause more wear on the mortise. Although, old Cajun's experience does not show that. Go figure! 8)

    How Dry is Too Dry?

I recently picked up some tobacco that was 40+ years old. The tin of white burley shown on the right was bone dry. I loaded it up and put the match to it. Smoked fine to the bottom. My first burley. It was sweet and nutty. I did humidify it some for a second bowl. Not as good as dry and it...

Have an Old Antique Pipe, and Some Questions

That is Beautiful! I would say that it is in very good condition. The flexible part of the stem is something that I have found broken to often. It looks fine. If the bowl is meerschaum, it looks heavily colored. Show us the inside of the bowl. It may be made of clay. As far as value, who knows...

    Re-Hyrdration

Also, I have found it helpful to put the bowl, wet towel etc into a plastic bag. The high humidity produced that way reduces the time it takes. :puffpipe:

    Portland Oregon

+1 on the Alder st store. Forget the 23rd street one. You can take the light rail if you do not want to walk. The Pearl is a great place in general. +100 on The House of Calabash. Talking to Steven is a treat but they did not have a lot of stock compared to Rich's when I was there.

Are There Any New Pipe Books Out There?

Thanks Phil, I will check that out. Barns and nobel would not order it for me. They and Amazon only had it on Kindle.

Newbie Needs Help With Inherited Pipe. Tyrolean?

Lawrence: Does you pipe have a metal liner in the bowl? I have not seen one like that before.

Newbie Needs Help With Inherited Pipe. Tyrolean?

It looks well used judging by the wear on the stem. I have looked into repairing this type of pipe and the European who does it was very expensive. I would keep it as a keepsake. If you find a reasonable repair shop please post same.

"Still in search of PD" Where Hard Copy?

I was at the B&M Barnes and Noble today. They would not even order a copy of In Search of Pipe Dreams for me. I bet it was because the subject is smoking.
