STG closes Mac Baren and Sutliff

Well I guess I’m getting some Kramer’s this year. We're gonna press on, and we're gonna have the hap, hap, happiest Christmas since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny freaking Kaye.

Show off Your Corn Cobs Here!

It’s missing the “collar” (?) but it was my great-grandfather’s. Smokes just fine, and required no cleaning compared to the multitude of briars he had. I don’t think the man cleaned them very often if at all, frankly.

    DIY English Aromatic

Hi everyone, It’s been a minute since I’ve posted or really had a lot of time to enjoy my pipes but I’m back. I’ve been playing around a bit with mixing blends at home, and read about the concept of English aromatics, which fascinates me. Are there any general guidelines to what makes a blend an...

    MSG in Pipe Tobacco?

A family member has voiced concern to me that pipe tobacco may contain MSG, and smoking it would be bad for that reason. Has anyone heard of this? Perhaps it is an additive in cigarettes? Thanks.

    “The Pipe”

Thanks for the info, I was a little concerned about the idea of smoking out of what seemed to be plastic.

    “The Pipe”

I’m digging through my box of pipes from my great grandfather, and found one simply labeled “The Pipe.” An ad on eBay for a similar pipe says it’s made of graphite and dates from the early seventies. Anyone familiar with this?

    Cincinnati Area Shop? (Or Columbus)

I’ve been to Barclay’s. Nice little shop.

    Stuck Stingers

As for my removing the stingers? Yep, a lighter and pliers did the trick.

    Stuck Stingers

This worked like a charm. Stingers removed in less than ten seconds each. Thanks again.

    Stuck Stingers

Is the alcohol okay on ebonite? Thanks!

    Stuck Stingers

I have two estate pipes with ebonite stems and stingers. As per the title, the stingers seem to be rather stuck, and I would like to remove them. Is there a way (maybe a solution or liquid?) to loosen them without damaging the stem? Thanks

    Sour (?) Stem

A strip of 1000 grit sandpaper and a very dirty bowl of water later, the stem is looking and smelling a lot better. Thank you all.

    Sour (?) Stem

Thanks for all the ideas. What should I do with sanding pads or the magic eraser? Simply take off the top layer?

    Sour (?) Stem

Yes, sulphuric is the word I am thinking of! Here is a picture.

    Sour (?) Stem

I bought an estate Royal Lane (Comoy second) pipe on Ebay, that, after a few days of cleaning, I am quite happy with. However, the stem tastes salty, and when wet, turns green and smells somewhat like asparagus. Can anyone help me discern what is happening and how to fix it? I have avoided using...

    Your Favorite Exorcist Blends

Hi everyone; I am about to get several estate pipes. In case they have some ghosts, what blends/brands do you recommend in restoring them to a more neutral state? I know Burley can help with this, but am having trouble finding ones without topping. Thanks in advance.

Breaking in a Pipe with Sir Walter Raleigh

From what I understand, SWR (normal, not "Aromatic") does have a light topping of molasses and anise. I also understand that Burleys are useful in breaking in pipes, at least according to some. Does SWR's topping disqualify it from building a neutral cake/carbon layer? Thanks!

    Greetings from North Georgia

Hi everyone; frequent lurker and new member from Georgia (the state, not nation). My great grandfather was an avid pipe smoker. The craft skipped two generations but it's returned in me. I started with a Sutliff aromatic in a cheapo Chinese made pipe a few months ago, but have learned a lot...
