    Preben Holm Question

    Yep.

    Preben Holm Question

I'm still thinking about your pipe, Baron. That is a stupid good price. My memory isn't great, but I seem to remember seeing these lines at the $50-60 price point back in the day....and gas was .$50/gal. To me, $50 then was serious pipe money. If we could take a ride in a time machine, we'd...

    Preben Holm Question

Holm made several lines under his "PH" label, a Zodiac and Classic series. Your Traditional series was one, too. These were done in the 1960's. The "Ruby" designation is the stain color and the C5 was the grade. Nice pipe! Notice how even carving a "traditional" shape, he couldn't help but...

    My Stanwell Danish Star

    Burly's

instymp- The difference between burley and virgina is one of taste. Burleys are usually cased in some way, and often present a taste that is described as "nutty" or "toasty". Virginias are very sweet and present a taste that is often described as "grassy" or "hay like". Within each group are...

    Opium Aromatic? Edit: (Perfume) L.

I don't know what opium smells like, but if you want perfumed tobacco, Lakeland blends will likely be something you find interesting. The blends I've tried made me feel like I was smoking soap. :|

    Burly's

Uhle's makes several top notch burley blends, I love Perfection Plug and 303. MacBaren's Golden Extra and London Blend are nice as well. Don't forget the classics like Prince Albert or Sir Walter Raleigh, they haven't lasted this long because they are poor smokes. :D

    Gouge in briar bowl-fixable?

Ideally, they should be flush with each other, otherwise it won't burn to the bottom. To the OP: this "gouge" isn't the start of a burn out is it?

Meerschaums - Smooth vs. Lattice Finishes; Your Preference

I prefer the intricate carving of a good lattice and like the way it will color the bowl while leaving the lattice work relatively uncolored for awhile. It gives the pipe a nice two tone look. One way to tell the difference between block and pressed meerschaum is to wet a finger and rub it...

Any gun guys out there that can help me?

I concur with the other opinions. It sounds like it might be a parts gun. China-made rifles are the only known bakelite stocked rifles. What are the Russian marks? It will likely be a good shooter. SKS rifles are a lot of fun and still relatively cheap to feed. They weren't designed to be...

Interesting Disovery about Briar Workshop Snowflake Logo

That is the only one I have, so my experience is limited to it. Its drilled perfectly, has a nice stain, and the bowl is smallish (perfect for high N blends that usually beat me up).

    How Cool Were You?

HA! I'd take Richard's "odd" moniker, although I preferred uniquely eccentric. Usually, it was just Get away from me, you weirdo!! :P

Interesting Disovery about Briar Workshop Snowflake Logo

Kriswell is another pipemaker that used the snowflake symbol.

    New Estate Purchase

How has it smoked for you? What have you tried in it so far?

    New Estate Purchase

Great find! That is a Holm era pipe. It is getting harder and harder to find pristine stem/crown combinations on his pipes as most are approaching 40 years old now. These are typical of the Danish Ben Wades and all had generous bowls. They feel great in the hand and will smoke a variety of...

Buying a Calabash from Meerschaum store

If estate pipes aren't a problem for you, they can be had much cheaper on EBay. Gourd calabash pipes are generally great pipes and offer a nice smoking experience.

    Thank you

Its very satisfying to have one's own tobacco buffet when it comes time to load a pipe. :puffpipe:
