I don't know what opium smells like, but if you want perfumed tobacco, Lakeland blends will likely be something you find interesting. The blends I've tried made me feel like I was smoking soap. :|- mlaug

Burly's
Uhle's makes several top notch burley blends, I love Perfection Plug and 303. MacBaren's Golden Extra and London Blend are nice as well. Don't forget the classics like Prince Albert or Sir Walter Raleigh, they haven't lasted this long because they are poor smokes. :D- mlaug

Gouge in briar bowl-fixable?
Ideally, they should be flush with each other, otherwise it won't burn to the bottom. To the OP: this "gouge" isn't the start of a burn out is it?- mlaug

Meerschaums - Smooth vs. Lattice Finishes; Your Preference

That is the only one I have, so my experience is limited to it. Its drilled perfectly, has a nice stain, and the bowl is smallish (perfect for high N blends that usually beat me up). -

Buying a Calabash from Meerschaum store
