Jim's Revised Amphora Red And Brown Reviews.

Yippee! Thanks for the great early reviews. I have been waiting impatiently for Amphora's return to the USA. Do you know if the Green (Rich Aroma) is also coming back here? :puffy:

A Very Short History Of Player's Digger Tobacco - >Image Heavy

Bravo! Love all the old advertising. When is a Digger Reissue coming out? :puffy:

What is up with Dutch Cavendish?

I didnt know about the Amphora return. That is good news! In the mean time, off to p&c to see what I can scrounge from what's left.

What is up with Dutch Cavendish?

The latest Pipes and Cigars Catalog arrived and the back cover claims Skandinavik, Sail and Troost have all been discontinued. What's up with that? First my beloved Amphora goes away and now these. Anyone have information on why this is happening? Hopefully somebody will come up with a...

What Are You Smoking For Christmas?

MacBaren Plumcake. Followed by Plumcake. And maybe a little more Plumcake after that. I've got a pound of this stuff to get me thru the holidays.

    West Coast Pipe Show 2015

I'll be going. Easy travel - I live about 3 miles from Palace Station! :P This is a great show every year.

    Lost in "aromatics"

My experience is a "Dutch Cavendish" is not like what is considered an "aromatic" here in America. Most American Style aromatics are heavily cased with fruit sauces and or vanilla. They never dry to a proper smokeable form. The scents are heavy, the smoke is dense and everybody around you is...

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (July 2015)

MacBaren Plumcake in the pinecone billiard. Tropical Storm Dolores is knocking out bridges in Southern California but still waiting for the rain to fall on the Las Vegas back porch.

I LOVE Stonehaven. What Else Might I Like?

I'm going to recommend an oddball here but you might want to give Dunhill Royal Yacht a try. Easy to get, rich dark Virginias and a unique figgy/chocolate/molasses note. Nic level is pretty high so beware. The other one that comes to mind is Orlik Dark Strong Kentucky.

What are the absolute must-see B&Ms in the USA?

In San Diego, check out Racine & Laramie in Old Town. It's a mix of pipe museum, tobacconist and cigar lounge. The place is housed in an adobe "barn" on the fringe of Old Town Square. LOTS of pipes, tins, bulk, house blends and giant cigar humidor. Old glass display cases filled with ancient...

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (June 2015)

The heat is on in the high desert (110F today). The portable swamp cooler is dueling with the blowtorch air on the back porch and I'm in the midst of the battle with some Voodoo Queen smoldering in the Savinelli Billiard. What side will win? Will the Voodoo Queen vanquish them both? We shall...

What are You Smoking? February 1, 2014

Enjoying a winter heat wave here on the high desert - glad I don't live in the southeast tonight! - with a parfait of carter hall and walnut in the freehand cob on the back porch. :puffy:

What's in the Mail? (Today's Purchase)

Not a mail purchase but a b&m acquisition from Racine & Laramie in old town San Diego. My first tub of sugar barrel. Just shot up the charts as my favorite OTC blend. Even beats out Walnut. And that's saying something. Classic old time pipey aroma and super cool. I rolled the dice on a full...

What Are You Smoking? August 2013

Waiting on the desert back porch for a "tropical surge" to dump its rain on the valley. Captain Black Gold in the Nording 925 accompanies me.

What Are You Smoking? June 2013

Some "vintage" BR bourbon whiskey in the saddle bit billiard on the desert back porch. And I'm enjoying it. So there! I think I finally figured out how to pack and smoke this blend so my tongue doesn't fry.

Help Choose the Next Lane Bulk Blend

Don't know if this was a Lane blend but there used to be a bulk called MT-150. Blend was to commemorate Mark Twain's 150th birthday. It was an aromatic for pipers who don't like aromatics. I thought it was great stuff but it seems to have been lost along the way. Otherwise, I have to place...

P&T Magazine Summer 2013 Issue is a Travesty

It is a beautiful pipe - the craft and imagination that went into the design. I remember a young gun named Trever Talbert who set the pipe community into a tizzy years ago with his Lovecraftian pipe themes and Halloween pipe monstrosities. I can appreciate these artisans' vision and rule...

What Are You Smoking? June 2013

Popped into the local B&M and got some baggies of these Newminster bulks. Puffing some superior navy flake on the back porch. The va is still a little "young" but with a little cellaring this stuff might be a keeper. Nice caramel note that is lasting deep into the smoke. I got some of the...

What Are You Smoking? June 2013

H&H Louisiana Red on the scorched desert back porch. :puffy: Reached 113F here today. Sun is down and it is now a comfortable 106F! :P
