    Dumping Ash...

What do you do during the smoke - just keep tamping, or dump along the way? Why? I have done both, but randomly, and for no reason (other than a windy day maybe to keep the ash from flying about) thus far. I personally need to study the effects, but curious what others do.

    Suspicious of Retrohaling...

One more reply: You said “It strikes me as odd that the only substance on the planet that needs to be physically pushedthrough the nose, in order to engage the nose, is tobacco smoke.” I can’t think of another substance that CAN be(comfortably). We can, so sometimes we do. No NEED to...

    Suspicious of Retrohaling...

I suggest that even if you don’t purposely retrohale, and just exhale the smoke, and then breathe normally through your nose, you would engage the olfactory senses - as you said, just because they are close/connected through the back of your throat. The retrohale just turbocharges that...

Flu Shot, If You Do That

Interesting CDC info: vaccine components for the 2019-2020 flu season were chosen back in March 2019... General effective period is for 6 months. I think the “wait until October” suggestion is more for efficacy than formulation. Stay healthy everyone! Pipes smoke and taste better without the...

Winter Is Coming... How To Keep Warm While Smoking In The Half-Open Garage.

Still a fan of taking 5 minutes to get the cast iron chiminea going on the patio...at least until the snow and sub freezing temps arrive... 40 clear and calm here tonight! Glorious!

Winter Is Coming... How To Keep Warm While Smoking In The Half-Open Garage.

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing”... Has been attributed to both the Swedish and Norwegians, so I‘ll attribute to the “Scandinavians”. Bundle up, go for a walk, fire up a heater, don’t smoke...designate an indoor space with ventilation... Good luck!

How Many Bowls a Day Do You Smoke?

About 4-5 a week here. Never more than 2 in a day, and that happens only 2-3 times a year. I tell my wife it’s my “zero calorie dessert”, almost always in the evening after dinner, and sometimes when walking the dog.

    The Vessel or the Contents?

Ok, this is a bit long winded, I admit...? But I was thinking about my own process of choosing a pipe from the rack, and a tobacco from the collection. There are 5 senses (or 9 senses, depending on classification): sight sound taste smell touch and adding the other 4: thermoception (heat and...

    Fireplaces and Wood Burning Stoves

The old saying - a wood fire heats you 3 times: Once when cutting, once when stacking and hauling, and once when burning... I guess as I get older, the 3 will go to 2 will go to one...but I always intend to have at least the final step of burning available!
