    1st ebay win

Good score! I'm pretty sure you would find something in that lot to match any smoking mood you were in. I wouldn't mind getting a some estate pipes to practice restoring, preferably ones like these Grabows that wouldn't represent a huge $ value if I botched it. Nice stand, too! Simon

    TAD Purchases

Thanks for the insights on packing the flake, ohin3! I'll see if this will work. My local tobacconist has a good selection of Solani blends, so I imagine I will try most of them in time. Simon

    The Ultimate Vanilla Pipe Tobacco?

Nope. I was just going to put my two cents in here for McClelland's bulk Vanilla Black Cavendish. It's one of my favorites thus far. I've been sampling different "flavors" in my aro's: Vanilla, Chocolate, Rum, etc. I imagine in time I will join the pursuit of the best in my favorite flavor. Simon

June 2010 - What are you Smoking?

Last night was the remainder of my Solani 633 flake in my Stanwell HCA. I'm a little loathe to admit it, but something happened... I think I overdid it. Whether it was because of the extra strength of the VaPer compared to my usual, or the fact that it was rubbed out and dry so I was smoking...

    TAD Purchases

Nice! I "splurged" yesterday on a single tin of Solani Virginia Flake 633. I contemplated getting a 100g tin of Erinmore Flake, but I chickened out. It ended well, though, the Solani's a winner! Just need to figure out how to pack it. I'll get that Erinmore someday... Simon

    The chicken or the egg?

I don't have enough pipes to "dedicate" any one to anything. I've got my trusty Brigham rusticated apple that seems to just be a good all-around smoker, and my Stanwell HCA that seems to be finicky. I'm trying to figure out what tobacco works best in it. When I do, I might very well restrict...

June 2010 - What are you Smoking?

Solani Virginia Flake with Perique (#633) in my Stanwell HCA churchwarden. It's a fresh tin, and I've used the fold and stuff method and I'm having trouble keeping it lit. Going to leave it 1/4 smoked and come back to it tomorrow. It's my first VaPer and it's a successful first foray. The tin...

Cake Soap & Brush, Aerosol Can, or Lecktric Shave

I'm 37 and started shaving with a Remington electric a long time ago. My Dad's an electric shaver man. I didn't switch to a razor until I had a job when I was 22 or so where the place I was staying didn't have a shaver plug in the bathroom. Sorta was forced out of my comfort zone. Then a couple...

    Masculinity disappeared with the pipe.

Good link to the Art of Manliness. Does it make me less manly to admit that I didn't know it existed? Ah well. Yet another of life's little disappointments. I'm not hung up about manliness, but I like to celebrate the differences between man and woman. As a fan of the work of Desmond Morris, I...

June 2010 - What are you Smoking?

A blend of McClelland bulk Colombian Mocha and bulk unflavored Burley in my Brigham 147 rusticated apple. I'd decided that I didn't like smoking the burley straight, so I'm seeing how it blends with some fairly flavorful aromatic black cavendish blends. So far, so good. I enjoy the Columbian...

    Coloring Meerschaums

I like the pure white of fresh meerschaum, but the color in the photo is breathtaking, pstlpkr. I've gotta get me one. Simon

IF you hit the TAD lottery..

I don't know enough at the moment to answer this intelligently, so I'll have a laugh when I look back on this in a few years. At the moment, I'm smoking McClelland blends and Plumcake. I'll say: 10 pounds of Vanilla Black Cavendish, 5 pounds of Frog Morton, FM On The Town and FM On The Bayou...

    Official PipesMagazine.com Stuff

Wow. What a crazy end to that. I saw the "POY" thread early on. I read it, shrugged, and left. I didn't have any interest in it, as is my choice. Then I saw it was closed, and saw Kevin's post at the end of it. I saw his point of view and wondered what would come of the out-of-forum...

    Recreated Tobacco Blends Article

Good article. Makes me wonder how firms get away with changing a product and calling the old name. "New and improved"? (It can't be both NEW and IMPROVED at the same time...) I haven't been at the pipe tobacco game long enough to have favorites that have disappeared, but I have wondered about...

    Apple Blends?

My tobacconist has Solani Green Label. I'll put that on my list when I'm picking up my next batch. The reviews at TR are mixed at best. People love it or hate it. Simon
