Opening the Draw on a Pipe

The senior reamer comes with a tool perfect for this use. It's worked very well for me when clearing out and opening up estate pipe airways.

    Mystery Pipe

Here is yet another ebay acquisition I had to have just because it looked so different. It's stamped, "OPERA" and underneath that it says, "featherweight". On the other side it says, "Made in France". From what I can find out through Web searches, the logo matches that of Yello-Bole, though I...

    Ugly Duckling?

Well, maybe it's not so ugly, just not a great design. I've been told that if a design has more than three "affectations" it is a bad design. In this case, the pipe has the two gold rings, the black band, the three silver "bullets" and the yellow stem, so it's on the excess side for sure. It's...

    Rye whiskey

checotah: It would be a pleasure, I'm sure. Try to make it on a day I have off! (I work 15:30-midnight)I'd look forward to meeting with some local pipers.

What Percent of Your Pipes Are In Plain View?

I've got find a better way to store my pipe collection. I started with two of my own and four of my grandfather's. Now I'm up to almost over thirty pipes with very limited space. About twenty or so are on pipe racks, the rest are in a drawer. I'm going to have to start selling some pretty soon...

    What does every workshop need.

You'll be happier with a variable speed drill if you are going that route. Also, I use a heat gun quite a bit to raise indentations on stems. they are pretty cheap. Small files are handy to have around too. My Dremel has been indispensable for sanding replacement stems down to size and removing...

    Rye whiskey

Ha ha! I meant, "Not too expensive" trailboss! But the drinks are on me if you are ever in the Portland/Beaverton area! I think I paid $35.00 for the 750mL bottle. That's not bad for a bottle of happiness.

What are You Smoking? February 1, 2014

Back to basics tonight. Smoked Squadron Leader in my GBD 9448. (With a little Canadian Mist on the side.)

    Rye whiskey

Not long ago I discovered a Canadian rye called 1910. It's been aged in tobacco charred oak casks. I thought it was very good and too expensive. Highly recommended! Link ---> 1910 rye whisky

What are You Smoking? February 1, 2014

I have 16 oz of Sutliff's Navigator which I find is too mild for me, and 4 oz of H&H Berry Nice which I find a bit too intense. So tonight I quick-blended them two to one and smoked that in an estate Dr Grabow Starfire I got today from Ebay. Not stellar, but not bad.

    Burning Temperature of Tobacco's

    Observations from a Greenhorn

1} Some tobaccos are harder than other to pack well. I don't know about Otter Creek, but someone else will. 2} Probably related to number 1, but just remember what you need for fire: Heat, Oxygen and Fuel in balance. 3} Probably puffing too fast. That could also be related to the first and...

It Ain’t Easy Being Keen: The Top Ten Problems Faced By Pipe Hobbyists

Hey, as far as burning holes in your clothes, doesn't anyone wear smoking jackets anymore? Mine's a forty year old Mickey Mouse sweater, but it's better than ruining my $15.00 Costo pullover shirt!

    Ugly Duckling?

Here is a pipe I picked up on eBay. Now I realize most guys are not going to like this thing, but I'm drawn to pipes a little out of the ordinary, especially if the price is right. This is why I win most of the auctions I bid on. :-) It's marked "Contempo" and "Italy" on the bottom. From what I...

    I'll smoke to that!

I get home just after midnight and have dinner, then check e-mail and this forum. Around 2 AM I'll pour myself a glass of yellow tail Shiraz (or something stronger) and light up a pipe in my office. That's when I'll either read, listen to the radio or work on refurbishing a pipe. On my days off...
