    Has Peterson Quality Really Declined?

Since my post 2 years ago on this subject I have found a filling on a $200 Peterson. It was covered by the finish, which has now worn off enough to see it. This is outrageous. They have lost all pride in what they do and from now on I will regard them as second rate pipes.

Did You Start with a Pipe or Something Else?

I started smoking cigarillos. They were a little expensive for a 12 year old at 25 cents for five. So I tried a pipe to save money. Preferred it.

Do former cigeratte smokers favour VA over anything else?

No. My favorite cigs were of Turkish tobacco (Balkan Sobranie white), which I like in a pipe mixture.

It Is Official... Rad Davis Has Retired

A fine pipemaker. Good luck to him. I am too old and lazy to photograph my one Rad.

    What does Latikia taste like?

Tastes like the armpit of a sweaty leather shirt.

How much can a pipe effect the smoking?

The four basic things that influence taste are the tobacco, the pipe (including dryness and cleanliness), technique and your mouth. A briar should be tight grained for a good smoke. Softer briar absorbs too much moisture and tastes soggy unless smoked very rarely Inadequately aged briar won't...

Is a Dunhill Worth the Cost?

JPM: the brand as a luxury item means nothing to me. I do not drive a luxury car, no servants, have minimal other possessions and all the art around here was made by me. I buy only Dunhills now, not because of the white spot or reputation. I get them because they are predictable smokers. I no...

Nothing At All Against You City Boys...

Formerly a NYC resident, now in the Catskills. Most of the pipesmokers around here have something else in their pipes. I have never met anyone here that loads tobacco.

Opinion please on a Dunhill I am about to pull the trigger on

Looks good. A pipe over 6" would smoke smoother.

    ANSWER WITHOUT THINKIN' BOUT IT!!!

I am down to two favorites. Bombay Court and Stokkebye's English Oriental. I do have lots of lat mixes that I will not touch until they age more.

Is a Dunhill Worth the Cost?

I am up to 110 Dunhills. I do not care about the name. I love some of the shapes (303 billiard, Crosby & prince) and know that if I get a Dunhill of the same shape, size and finish as one I already have, it will taste the same. This is why I get them. Am tired of buying pipes from supposedly...

    Dunhill Twin Bore Mouthpiece/Stem?

Now that you mention it, I had some twin bore Charatans in the 1950s. They were a nuisance. I never saw a Dunhill like that.

    Dunhill 5203

The Cumberland and the Shell are the two worst tasting Dunhill finishes. Any other is OK.

What's Best When Nursing Cake In New Pipe? Spade, Knife, or Cork Knocker?

For emptying the pipe, try a pipe nail. One end is a tamper, the other a perfect emptying tool. Price about $1.

    Risk It On Another Stanwell?

This is just my opinion. I say no. I have had a number of Stanwells. I like their shapes. But none of them were really good. And the Italian made Stans are worse.

Is a Dunhill Worth the Cost?

Yes, worth it. The black shells are the worst smokers though. If you want a blasted pipe the County and Ruby Bark are better. The Cumberland, not so good.

    Question on PETERSON

Hi Namdoc: I can't answer your question. Just wanted to say hi and express gratefulness. Until your arrival I had been the longest term smoker at 59 years for pipes, 61 including cigars. Hope you like it here.
