    Thoughts on The Chair?

I haven't worked in 20 years so I can relax any time I want. And my favorite for pipe smoking is a beat up old rattan that rocks and swivels and sits on the patio. Give me that, a cold ginger ale and a little sunshine and I'm happy.

I'm gonna miss Sutliff J4 burley.

Of the few blends I've tried, this is my favorite. I don't get any bite, it burns great and the taste just suits me. I let a little bit drift up into my head and feel like purring. I hope I can find something similar in the future. Anybody have any suggestions?

    I wonder why tamping helps.

But then I read that I should only use the weight of the tamper. And, it seems like that just crushes the soft ash on top.

    I wonder why tamping helps.

It's been a long time since I made a campfire, but my recollection is that once you get them going you don't have to touch them and they will burn to ash.

    I wonder why tamping helps.

I mean, I know it makes the tobacco stay lit better, but I wonder why it does that. My guess is that compressing the ash restricts air flow or maybe acts as an insulator. I know that if I try to light pipe tobacco in a saucer it won't stay lit even though it's in open air. It will glow if you...

Ever Bought a Pipe Just as a Curiosity?

I got to looking closely at that whale bone pipe and I can see a seam where it was actually molded from glass. So, I got took. Anyway, at least it has a dragon on it. And, I've found that the so called buc buc is really an Indian hookah. I was pretty gullible in those days.

    Show your kiseru.

I bought this pipe as souvenir in '65 in Yokosuka. I've always thought it was an opium pipe. But recently I've discovered that it is a traditional Japanese tobacco pipe. I can tell that it is hand made by the irregularities in the brass. And, that also tells me it was not a very expensive...

Are tobacco reviews really of much value?

I've looked at a lot of reviews. It seems to me that for most of them there are those who love it and others who hate it. Guys get all kinds of flavors and they often don't agree. What it amounts to is that you don't really know if you will like a tobacco until you try it yourself. And the...

    Still getting a little tingle.

I have 7 pipes that I rotate, 6 briars and one cob. The cob has a filter. It's not that I'm complaining. It's no big deal. I was just curious if others experienced the same.

    Still getting a little tingle.

I have some Sutliff sweet Virginia and I can't handle it at all. I do best with J4 burley, 1M, and SWR.

    Still getting a little tingle.

Thanks. I guess I need to keep working on my technique.

    Still getting a little tingle.

I've gotten to where I don't get much tongue bite anymore, at least with the tobaccos I've been smoking. But, I do still get a slight tingling sensation on my tongue after every smoke. I wonder if everyone gets this and it's just part of pipe smoking. Or, do experienced smokers not get it at...

Would you keep an ugly pipe that smokes really well?

Just to clarify. I was asking two questions. And, I didn't buy this pipe. It was part of a collection that an elderly neighbor gave me a long time ago. I wouldn't have picked it out myself.

Would you keep an ugly pipe that smokes really well?

I have an old Yello Bole bulldog that's really pretty ugly. But, I always get a good smoke from it and I wouldn't trade it. Would you keep a pretty pipe that smokes lousy?

    A Jarring Question.

When you jar tobacco, do you pack it down tight or just dump it in? Does it matter?

    What Defines a Codger?

Well, I have yelled "Get out of my tree." Dang kids.

    What Defines a Codger?

I’m 85. I have 7 pipes that I smoke. One is a cob. None of them are very valuable. I don’t plan on buying any more. I generally smoke one bowl a day in 2 or 3 sessions. I have a few pouches of tobacco, none of them expensive. I’m happy with them. My favorites are Sutliff J4 Burley and SWR. Am I...

    Chemical Tongue Bite?

Mr. Pease says this: I can't count the number of times I've read this. For some reason, it's commonly believed that the more sugar in the leaf, the more “bite” the smoker will experience. While it's true that some tobaccos with a lot of sweetness do tend to irritate the smoker, it's not the...

    Chemical Tongue Bite?

Maybe someone can explain to me why acidity in tobacco smoke can cause tongue bite but in food and drinks it doesn't. I would think that lemonade would be a killer.

    Chemical Tongue Bite?

Thanks for the link. But, why do people ignore the fact that tobacco smoke contains Acrolein, Hydrogen Cyanide, and Ammonia, none of which are tongue friendly. If the concentration is low enough, saliva will dilute them to where they don't cause any discomfort. But, blast furnace heat creates...
