    Chemical Tongue Bite?

If tongue bite is caused by heat, why don't you sense it immediately like when you sip a cup of really hot coffee? If the smoke were really hot enough to burn your tongue, you wouldn't take a second puff. Or, to use your analogy, if pizza burns the roof of your mouth, you don't take a second...

    Chemical Tongue Bite?

There is an irritant in tobacco smoke called Acrolein. It can be produced by burning carbohydrates, especially sugars. It was actually used in chemical warfare during WWI because of its irritating and blistering qualities. Higher temperatures make more of it and so do tobaccos with high sugar...

    Plastic for Storing Tobacco?

OK. I thought Tupperware was air tight. They used to talk about burping the lid when you close it. I guess the plastic bags my samples came in aren't too good either.

    Plastic for Storing Tobacco?

I see talk about using Mason jars or Mylar bags for storing tobacco. I'm sure they work fine. But no one seems to use the Tupperware type containers. Is there a reason why? It seems like they would be more convenient, stackable and easy access.

    Trying Out an English Blend.

I haven't acquired the ability to taste all the tobacco flavors I read about. But, I do enjoy simple blends like Duke Albert. Maybe it's not worth the effort and expense for me to try to find my perfect tobacco. Maybe I'm a codger. I can live with that.

    Trying Out an English Blend.

Well, I give up on the Smooth English for now. This morning I had some of my Sutliff Duke Albert and it was so much better. I appreciate all of your advice and when I make my next tobacco order I will try one of them. I'm stashing the Smooth English away and maybe time will improve it, or my...

    Trying Out an English Blend.

Thanks! There are so many choices it's kind of confusing. I will say that Smooth English is definitely different than what I've been smoking. Maybe it's the latakia.

    Trying Out an English Blend.

I've been smoking mild aromatics and enjoying them, but I keep reading that some guys eventually graduate to English blends. So, I bought a sample of C&D Smooth English. I figured maybe that would be a good introduction to the type. It is different, not a lot of flavor. It came crispy dry...

    A Thought; A Question

Propylene Glycol has a low volatility and doesn't really evaporate at room temperatures. It's hygroscopic and attracts water which is why it keeps tobacco moist. If you heat it enough, it will vaporize. That may be why drying tobacco in a microwave seems to work so well.

    A Thought; A Question

As I was watching the smoke curling up from my pipe, a thought occurred to me. I read here that some tobaccos contain propylene glycol. That’s what they put in e-cigarettes that, when it gets hot, generates a white fog that looks like smoke but isn’t. I wonder if my pipe smoke is at least...

Effects of Altitude on Smoking Certain Blends?

Not at all. I did it many times in the Navy. The problem starts when you've been submerged all day and the air gets so thin a match won't stay lit.

    Things I've Learned So Far

It's not a contest. You don't get a prize for leaving nothing but white ash or never having to relight. A relight gives time for a break and a sip of whatever you're drinking at the time. It's even OK if you only smoke half a bowl and dump out the rest. Nobody really cares. And you don't...

    My Kaywoodie Campus

Thanks. I'm no expert, but I think it smokes well. I've had many good smokes from it.

    My Kaywoodie Campus

Thanks. That's a bit of cotton. It keeps the magnet from falling out and I fluffed it to resemble smoke. I think it may be the first pipe I bought back in the early 60's. I worked with a pipe smoker and he got me interested in them. It's one of my special pipes.

    My Kaywoodie Campus

This was my Navy pipe. There is a magnet in the bowl and one in the base.

    Best Smoke Yet.

I had a lot of decent bowls back then. But, I stopped smoking for about 40 years and you'd be surprised at how much you can forget in that length of time.

Yes, it's a tapered metal sleeve. Here is a close up. Here is the label on the bottom of the cobs.

    Best Smoke Yet.

Thanks for the comments. The sticker on the bottom of the cobs just says Missouri Meerschaum and there's a MM co emblem. I got it back in the 60's and never smoked it much then. I like that you can rotate between cobs. Four of the pipes in the rack were given to me by an elderly neighbor...

    Best Smoke Yet.

I just had some Sutliff J4-Burley in my cob and it was my best smoke yet. The pipe almost smoked itself, just a few re-lights and burned almost to the bottom. And, zero tongue bite. I think I'm getting the hang of it. I love this cob with the long stem and interchangeable bowls.

    Is it Really Block Meerschaum?
